Chapter 5 - THE FOUNDER’S RESERVE

Margaret did not wait for his response.

With a smooth, dismissive flick of her wrist, she turned her back on her son and handed the folded vellum paper across the black lacquer counter to Sofia.

"Miss Sofia," Margaret said, her tone shifting seamlessly from lethal family matriarch to an impeccably polite patron. "Please retain this document for your records. I never signed it. I never authorized this gathering. And under no circumstances is a single penny of that thirty-eight-thousand-dollar balance to be charged to the Whitmore corporate ledger."

Sofia took the document with both hands. Her professional poise, honed by years in luxury service, had kept her silent, but her sharp eyes were wide, alert, and processing the legal catastrophe that had just detonated at her station.

"Understood, Mrs. Whitmore," Sofia said, her voice steady and clear.

Adam lunged forward, slamming his palm flat against the lacquer wood beside the keyboard. "Sofia, wait! Do not alter that reservation! I am a named director on Whitmore Capital! My mother does not have the unilateral authority to cancel corporate entertainment disbursements on holidays!"

"Adam, remove your hand from that desk," Margaret commanded, without raising her voice by an octave.

The authority in her tone was so ancient, so absolute, that Adam’s hand recoiled from the lacquer counter as if burned.

Sofia ignored Adam completely. She turned her attention to the glowing terminal screen, her fingers flying across the mechanical keys, entering the override sequence to access the primary client profile attached to the account number Adam had provided.

The screen flickered. A high-priority amber security banner flashed across the top of the terminal:

RESTRICTED ACCOUNT — TIER ZERO FOUNDER'S RESERVE. PRIMARY BENEFICIARY & SOLE GOVERNING TRUSTEE: MARGARET VANCE WHITMORE. RESTRICTION OVERRIDE: IN-PERSON BIOMETRIC OR SECURE TOKEN ONLY. ZERO PROXY AUTHORIZED.

Sofia’s eyes scanned the profile lines below the warning.

Her gaze dropped to the secondary corporate metadata linked to the account—the entity ownership records, the commercial real estate leases, and the capital holding structure governing Bellanote itself.

Sofia’s breath stopped dead in her throat.

Her fingers froze above the keyboard. The color drained from her cheeks, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated awe. Her posture, already professional, transformed into something resembling military reverence.

She looked up from the screen. She looked at Margaret Whitmore’s tailored navy suit, at the platinum-and-pearl oak leaf brooch resting against her lapel, and at the quiet, unyielding power radiating from her silver-haired presence.

"Mrs. Whitmore," Sofia murmured, her voice breathless, stepping out from behind the hostess stand and bowing her head in a gesture of profound, instinctive deference. "I... I apologize profusely. The system did not display the primary trust identity until the manual override was engaged."

Adam stared at Sofia, his brow knitting into a sharp, bewildered scowl. He looked between the bowing manager and his mother’s impassive face, his voice rising in petulant confusion.

"What?" Adam demanded, gesturing wildly at the screen. "What does it say? Why are you bowing to her?!"
