Chapter 10 - THE MONEY CLAIRE NEVER SPENT

The financial investigation reopened alongside the homicide case.
Claire's original accusations had been correct.
Lorraine and Marcus had diverted more than $1.1 million from the family trust before Claire disappeared.
Afterward, Lorraine forged additional authorizations.
Once Claire was declared legally dead, her remaining share was distributed.
Victoria received approximately $820,000 over several years.
She had used some of it to buy her first home.
Some funded investments.
Some still remained.
Ethan knew none of this.
Victoria had told him her savings came from “family property sold years ago.”
Technically true.
Deliberately incomplete.
Then investigators discovered another document.
Six months before the wedding, Victoria had changed her estate plan.
She had placed much of her remaining family wealth into a private trust.
The beneficiary wasn't Ethan.
It wasn't Lily.
It was Lorraine.
Even after sixteen years.
Even after everything.
Victoria was still protecting her mother financially.
Ethan struggled to understand it.
Ruth did not.
“Lorraine trained both girls from childhood to believe family loyalty meant silence.”
“Claire escaped that.”
“Yes.”
“And Victoria didn't.”
“Not until Lily found the pendant.”
Ethan looked away.
“Lily shouldn't have had to.”
“No.”
That evening, Lily asked a question Ethan had been dreading.
“Is Victoria going to come home?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
“No.”
Lily picked at the edge of her blanket.
“Because she hit me?”
“That alone would've been enough.”
Lily looked surprised.
Ethan moved closer.
“No one gets to hurt you because they're angry.”
“Even family?”
“Especially family.”
She thought about that.
“Was the lady in the necklace Victoria's family?”
“Yes.”
“Did Victoria hurt her too?”
Ethan hesitated.
“She hurt her by not telling the truth.”
Lily looked toward the window.
“Is she dead?”
Ethan didn't lie.
“Yes.”
Lily became quiet.
Then:
“Did they find her because I found the necklace?”
“In part.”
Her eyes filled.
“I wish I didn't find it.”
“Why?”
“Then maybe Victoria wouldn't have hit me.”
Ethan's heart broke.
He pulled her into his arms.
“No, Lily.”
She cried against his chest.
“Finding the truth didn't make Victoria hurt you. Victoria made that choice.”
He held her until she stopped shaking.
For years, Claire had been blamed for exposing family money.
May you like
Now Lily was blaming herself for exposing a family secret.
Ethan refused to let the same pattern survive another generation.
