Chapter 9 - The Alliance of the Damned

Ten minutes later, a non-descript black SUV pulled up to the emergency loading zone outside the subway station.
The door opened, and Marcus stepped out, holding a thick woolen blanket and a pair of dry winter boots. He wrapped the blanket around Rachel's shivering shoulders, helped her into the passenger seat, and cranked the heater to maximum.
"I’m sorry I couldn't tell you at the hotel," Marcus said as he pulled the SUV into the crawling blizzard traffic. "If Henderson or Evelyn knew I was Thomas Vance's son, they would have scrubbed every server in the city before I could secure the hotel footage."
Rachel wrapped the blanket tight around her neck, her feet slowly regaining sensation near the hot air vents.
"You worked as a hotel security guard for two years?" she asked, looking at his sharp profile.
"I took the job under an alias after federal investigators told me the case against the Vance family was dead for lack of primary evidence," Marcus explained, his hands gripping the steering wheel firmly. "I knew Evelyn frequented that hotel when she came to Chicago to manage her offshore accounts. I was waiting for her to make a mistake."
"She didn't make a mistake," Rachel said softly, pulling the three USB drives from her sweater pocket and laying them on the center console. "David gave us her downfall."
Marcus looked down at the drives. A small, solemn smile crossed his face.
"David Miller was a good man, Rachel," Marcus said quietly. "Before my father died in that fire, he called me from his office. He told me that David had agreed to keep the evidence safe until I was old enough and established enough in the Justice Department to bring the charges myself. David hid in South Chicago for ten years not just to protect his daughters, but to protect me until I had the authority to act."
Tears spilled down Rachel's cheeks—not tears of fear or grief, but of a deep, restoring pride. Her husband hadn't abandoned his integrity; he had carried a mantle of silent heroism through every hardship they had endured together.
"What do we do now?" Rachel asked.
"We unlock Drive 1 using your mother's name," Marcus said, tapping his dashboard screen. "Then we execute a federal arrest warrant for Evelyn Vance, Julian Vance, and every associate tied to Vance-Miller Logistics."

"They threatened my daughters, Marcus," Rachel said, her voice dropping into an unyielding steel tone. "They sent a message saying they would ruin my family if I didn't deliver these drives to Pier 31."
Marcus’s eyes hardened. "Then we're going to give them exactly what they asked for at Pier 31—with a federal strike team waiting in the storm."
