Chapter 8 - THE COST OF MY NAME

The legal and financial process moved slowly.
The bank froze the seven accounts while investigators separated legitimate transactions from fraudulent ones. Credit bureaus placed extended alerts on my profile. I filed identity-theft reports, replaced identification, changed account numbers, and spent hours proving I had not borrowed money I never received.
There was no instant restoration.
My credit score dropped before it recovered.
A legitimate refinancing application for my townhouse was delayed.
I missed work to attend interviews.
Every envelope made my stomach tighten.
Ethan moved into his parents’ house after a temporary protective order required him to stay away from me. He sent messages through his attorney saying he wanted counseling and that financial stress had made him “react physically.”
A slap was not a weather event.
Seven forged accounts were not stress.
They were choices arranged over years.
The mortgage portal finally removed my card. Marjorie’s medical account stopped calling me. The SUV lender repossessed the vehicle after nobody made the overdue payments. Harper Family Services was closed after investigators determined it had been used primarily to move debt.
His parents did not become homeless overnight.
They listed the house.
The sale covered most of the mortgage but not every obligation. Howard moved into a smaller rental. Marjorie stayed with a sister who required her to contribute from her own retirement check.
For the first time in years, their lives had to fit inside their actual income.
Ethan lost his job after his employer learned he had used company equipment to submit fraudulent applications during work hours. That did not make me happy.

It made the pattern undeniable.
He had gambled his job, his marriage, and my home because he believed my name was a renewable resource.
