Chapter 6 - The Call He Could Not Control
Madeline had already activated the emergency call function on her phone.
Dr. Bell remained connected through the hospital’s patient safety office, and Boston police were dispatched after hearing part of the confrontation.
Andrew moved toward the kitchen exit.
Madeline blocked neither him nor Elise.
She simply photographed the bottle, the open drawer, and the documents inside it.
Andrew changed tactics.
“You’re confused. Your vision just returned. You’re overwhelmed.”
Madeline looked directly at him.
“That explanation worked better when I couldn’t see your face.”
Elise began crying.
“He said you knew about us.”
Andrew turned.
“Elise.”
“He told me the marriage was only legal on paper. He said you didn’t understand anything anymore.”
“You lived in my home.”
“I thought he was leaving you.”
“You wore my clothes.”
Elise looked down at the robe.
The affair was not innocent because Andrew had lied to both women.
But the panic in Elise’s face revealed that she had not understood the full plan.
She knew about the property.
She knew Andrew expected Madeline to sign documents.
She did not know the eye drops had been tampered with.
Police entered the apartment minutes later.
Andrew insisted the bottle contained a harmless herbal preparation.
Dr. Bell arrived with a hospital security liaison and confirmed that laboratory tests detected a prescription compound capable of interfering with healing and causing sedation.
The same compound appeared in residue inside the bottle.
Officers secured the kitchen.
The phone.
The documents.
The medicine.
