Chapter 3

I spent six weeks playing the wife his mother believed she had engineered — quiet, compliant, slightly shaken, the kind of woman who apologizes for things she did not do because she has decided that apologizing is cheaper than fighting. I let Derek believe the belt incident had worked, that fear had recalibrated me the way his mother had promised him it would. I signed nothing. I documented everything. I used those six weeks to quietly move liquid assets out of joint accounts Derek didn't know I'd noticed him opening in my name, to retain an attorney through a firm two states away that had no connection to anyone in our social circle, and to gather three additional recordings of Derek and his mother discussing the timeline for what they called, on one particularly careless call, "finalizing the transfer before she gets a lawyer of her own."

I let it run for six weeks because I wanted more than a clean exit.

I wanted them to have no room left to claim, afterward, that this had been a misunderstanding, a rocky start to a marriage, a wife who panicked and overreacted to one bad night. I wanted a record so complete that neither of them could ever again tell this story as something that happened to me rather than something I ended.

When I finally filed, I filed for full annulment on grounds of fraud and coercion, submitted the recordings to my attorney and, separately, to the district attorney's office, and watched Derek's mother get charged with conspiracy to commit financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult — a charge that ultimately did not stick, because I was, on paper, not legally vulnerable, just recently bereaved, and the distinction mattered enormously to a judge who had clearly seen worse and was unmoved by my six weeks of patient documentation.

Derek was charged with domestic battery. The case settled. He served no time. He paid a fine and completed a court-mandated program and is, as far as I know, remarried to someone else now, in a different state.

I kept the house. I kept the properties. I kept the recordings, which I still have, in a drawer I do not open often.
