Chapter 15 - THE PHOTO FROM INSIDE THE SCHOOL

The company did not sell to Northstar that month.

Another bidder entered.

Northstar raised again.

First Atlantic extended the market check.

Nobody got a fast ending.

Carter & Hayes refinanced enough debt to buy sixty days.

Expensive.

Not fatal.

Rebecca stayed COO.

No trust authority.

Daniel stayed protector with First Atlantic's attorney co-signing major actions.

He hated needing approval.

Good.

I withdrew every version of my removal declaration.

If Daniel needed removing later, it would be based on what he did later.

Not a fight somebody staged.

My Westbridge restriction ended after thirty days.

The principal made me sign a parent conduct agreement before I returned to regular pickup.

I signed every page.

Read them too.

Daniel and Noah had met three times.

Always planned.

Always through me.

No secret texts.

No one called Daniel Uncle D yet.

That was okay.

Rebecca apologized to Noah privately with me present.

She told him she used his name in a message without permission.

No trust details.

No company crisis.

No request that he understand why.

Noah said:

“Don't do it again.”

She said:

“I won't.”

That was all he owed her.

Daniel and I were not friends.

But one afternoon at the park, I asked:

“Do you still think Andrew was right to make you protector?”

Daniel thought.

“No.”

That surprised me.

“Then why stay?”

“Because removing me now rewards the exact mess that made removal necessary.”

Annoying.

Probably right.

Then:

“When the sale is done, I might resign.”

“Why?”

“Noah is getting older.”

He looked toward my son.

“At some point Andrew's dead friend shouldn't have more authority over Noah's money than the professionals around him.”

That sounded almost healthy.

Then Elliot called.

Not urgent.

Just:

“I need you to see something.”

We met at his office.

Daniel came.

Rebecca too.

The carrier had not identified the woman who impersonated me.

But Westbridge had completed an unrelated camera export after police closed the school report.

One angle had been missed initially.

Inside the administration building.

Second-floor window facing the gate.

At 3:09 p.m., before Daniel reached Noah, somebody stood behind the glass.

Phone raised.

Recording.

Face blocked by glare.

Could be staff.

Parent.

Visitor.

Then Daniel arrived.

I hit him.

The person kept filming.

Dark SUV arrived.

Elliot stepped out.

The person lowered the phone.

Then left the room.

School badge logs showed no staff badge used at that office.

The room had been reserved by an outside visitor.

Name:

MARK ELLIS

Rebecca looked up.

“There.”

Elliot shook his head.

“The identification was submitted online.”

“Still him.”

“Maybe.”

Then he showed us the security desk scan.

The visitor used a driver's license.

Photo blurred in the stored image.

But the height and age field did not match Mark.

Mark was forty-three.

The visitor declared:

Fifty-eight.

Daniel frowned.

“Who was he pretending to be?”

Elliot enlarged the reservation form.

Company:

Crestline Advisory.

Meeting host:

Westbridge advancement office.

Purpose:

Potential campus design donation.

The appointment was real enough that nobody questioned it.

Then Elliot placed one final item on the table.

A message sent to his office thirty minutes earlier.

Unknown sender.

One photograph attached.

It had been taken from that second-floor window.

Me striking Daniel.

Noah behind me.

The SUV approaching in the street.

Underneath, two sentences.

Rebecca wanted Daniel removed.

Then:

I wanted you to open Bluebird.

Nobody spoke.

Rebecca stared.

Daniel looked at Elliot.

I read it again.

Rebecca had staged Daniel's arrival for her petition.

Someone else had seen the opportunity.

Changed the school record.

Redirected Elliot.

Watched us collide.

Not to help Northstar.

Not necessarily to hurt Noah.

To force Andrew's sealed memorandum open.

Elliot turned the phone toward me.

“There is one more attachment.”

A scan.

Not from Bluebird.

Andrew's handwriting.

I recognized it.

A note I had never seen.

If Claire ever learns what I did after Harbor, she will think Daniel knew. He didn't. Mark did.

Daniel went still.

Rebecca whispered:

“Mark Ellis?”

Maybe.

The note gave no last name.

Only Mark.

Then my phone rang.

No caller ID.

Everyone looked at me.

I did not answer.

It stopped.

A voicemail appeared immediately.

Seven seconds.

I played it on speaker.

No disguised voice this time.

A man.

Calm.

Older.

“I never wanted Daniel at the school.”

Pause.

“You still haven't asked who changed Harbor after Andrew died.”

The recording ended.

Rebecca stood.

Daniel looked at her.

She shook her head.

“I didn't change it.”

Elliot reached for the Harbor file.

I looked at the photograph of the school gate again.

For weeks we had been asking who wanted Daniel removed.

Then who wanted the company sold.

Then who wanted Elliot at Westbridge.

Maybe none of those were the right question.

Because somebody had not brought us together to create a new secret.

He had brought us together because an old one still had not been opened.

And this time, I did not hit anyone.

I answered the second call.

No one spoke.

Then somewhere on the other end—

a paper file opened.
