Chapter 4 - Steam in the Kitchen

Inside the vast, state-of-the-art commercial kitchen of The Luminary, the scene was starkly quiet. Stainless steel countertops stretched down long aisles, gleaming under the harsh, white fluorescent prep lights. Rows of polished copper pots hung silently from overhead racks.
James Whitmore stood in the center of the dark kitchen.
His face was flushed, his jaw set so tightly that the muscles along his temples twitched under his skin. Slowly, deliberately, James unbuttoned his heavy charcoal overcoat and tossed it onto a clean prep table. He unbuttoned his suit jacket, pulling it off and draping it over a chair. He loosened his deep crimson silk tie, unbuttoned his top collar button, and rolled his crisp white shirt sleeves tightly up his forearms.
He turned toward the commercial walk-in refrigerator, pulled open the massive stainless steel door, and stepped inside into the arctic mist.
Ten seconds later, James emerged carrying a wooden crate filled with prime ingredients: fresh herbs, heavy cream, garlic cloves, a slab of dry-aged beef tenderloin, thumb-sized shallots, and fresh root vegetables.
He slammed the heavy wooden board onto a stainless steel station.
Clang!
A heavy copper skillet hit the iron grate of the gas range. James reached down, twisted the brass valve, and ignited the burner. A bright blue ring of flame flared up into the darkness, casting long, dramatic shadows against the white tiled walls.
Grace crept quietly toward the kitchen doors. She pushed the right-hand swinging door open an inch, peering into the brightly lit cooking line in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
Inside, the famous billionaire owner of the Whitmore Hospitality Group was moving with blinding, terrifyingly expert speed.
He didn't cook like an amateur or an executive playing at a hobby. His movements were precise, disciplined, and wildly aggressive—the movements of a man who had spent years sweating over line fires. He sliced shallots into micro-thin ribbons, crushed garlic cloves with the flat of a heavy chef’s knife, and seasoned meat with high, sweeping arches of kosher salt.
Oil sizzled violently as beef hit the red-hot skillet. A dense, brilliant plume of fragrant steam rose toward the silver exhaust hood, carrying the rich, overwhelming scents of seared meat, melted butter, crackling rosemary, and caramelized onions into the air.
Beside Grace, little Chloe poked her head out through the lower crack of the swinging door, her dark eyes wide with innocent astonishment.

“Mommy...” Chloe whispered, her small stomach letting out a loud, hollow growl. “Is... is he cooking for us?”
Grace stood frozen, watching the billionaire wipe sweat from his forehead with his forearm as he tossed fresh thyme into the bubbling pan. She pressed her hand to her throat, her lips trembling, completely unable to answer her daughter’s question.
