Chapter 6 - Say It Carefully

Adrian recovered badly.
That was the first mercy of the evening.
A smarter man would have said nothing. He would have asked for counsel, ended the dinner, and let lawyers protect whatever remained. But Adrian had built his life on charm, and charm is useless only after the room has already seen the knife.
“Heard what?” he asked.
Sandra’s pen moved once across her notepad.
Kelsey closed her eyes.
I tilted my head.
“Say one more word carefully.”
Adrian laughed, but there was no sound in it.
“Fallon, this feels like a misunderstanding. Whatever you think you heard—”
“Darling,” I said.
His mouth stopped moving.
Quentin looked from me to Adrian.
I continued, voice steady.
“When Fallon’s father transfers the two hundred million dollars, I’ll divorce her. I promise.”
Kelsey’s hand gripped the edge of the table.
A waiter appeared in the doorway, saw the room, and vanished wisely.
Adrian whispered, “You had me on speaker?”
“No. You forgot to hang up.”
The simplicity of it seemed to humiliate him more than strategy would have.
He turned toward Kelsey, and that was his next mistake. Just one glance. Quick, pleading, furious.
My father saw it.
Sandra saw it.
I saw it.
Kelsey whispered, “Adrian.”
Quentin leaned forward slightly.
“Ms. Voss,” he said, using Kelsey’s last name with a politeness that turned the air colder, “are you aware that any attempt to induce a family investment through concealed marital fraud may expose you to discovery?”
Kelsey’s face changed.
Not guilt first.
Fear.
“I didn’t induce anything,” she said.
Adrian snapped, “Don’t talk.”
Sandra looked up.
“Thank you. That dynamic is helpful.”
I almost smiled.
Almost.
Adrian saw it and finally understood I was not there to beg. I was not there to ask why. I was not there to compete with my best friend for a man who had converted marriage into a funding mechanism.
“You can’t do this,” he said.
“I already did,” I replied.
“The company will collapse.”
“No,” Quentin said calmly. “Companies collapse from bad leadership. Capital merely stops hiding it.”
Adrian turned to my father.
“Quentin, please. We can handle this privately.”
My father’s face did not move.
May you like
“You planned to humiliate my daughter privately. You planned to take her money publicly. You do not get to choose the direction of the consequences.”
For the first time all night, Adrian had no sentence ready.
