Chapter 8 - EVELYN'S LIE

Daniel found the missing diary pages before investigators found Vivian. Evelyn had them.

She arrived at Rebecca's office carrying a sealed plastic folder and asked to speak to Daniel without police present. Rebecca refused to leave the room but allowed Evelyn to sit across from her brother-in-law while Lily remained safely elsewhere.

Evelyn placed three torn pages on the table.

Daniel stared at her. “You broke into the house?”

“No.”

“Then how did you get these?”

“I took them before Clara died.”

That answer changed the entire first week of the investigation.

Evelyn admitted she had been removing selected pages from Clara's diary because Clara was becoming increasingly reckless. Clara wanted to tell Daniel immediately after the DNA samples were collected, but Evelyn kept arguing that they needed legal advice first. When Clara wrote instructions telling Evelyn to bring Lily directly to Daniel if anything happened, Evelyn tore those pages out.

“Why?”

“Because I thought she was making another decision in panic.”

“You thought you knew better.”

“Yes.”

Daniel's anger became quieter. “And after she died?”

Evelyn looked at her hands. Clara died before the DNA result arrived. Warren immediately demanded Lily's return, while Daniel was barely functioning through funeral arrangements. Evelyn believed that if she gave Lily to Daniel without proof, Warren's valid adoption decree would remove the child within hours and Daniel would lose her again.

“So you hid her.”

“At first I kept her normally in the house. She slept in Clara's old room. She ate with me. I wasn't keeping her inside that wall for eighteen days.”

Daniel already knew the medical evidence supported that, but the distinction did not absolve her.

Evelyn continued. The day before Daniel arrived, Warren found the address. Evelyn panicked because Clara had once shown her the narrow service cavity they used as children and said it could hide documents if Meridian came looking. Evelyn placed Lily there with water, crackers and a flashlight, intending to leave for less than an hour while she took Clara's evidence to a lawyer.

The old panel warped shut from the hallway side.

Evelyn could not reopen it when she returned.

Instead of calling emergency services, she spent the night trying to remove another section from the adjacent room because she feared police would return Lily to Warren before she could explain.

Daniel stared at her. “She was calling for help.”

“I know.”

“You heard her?”

“Not after a while.”

Evelyn started crying, but Daniel did not rescue her from the weight of the admission.

The midpoint reversal was not merely that Evelyn had lied. Clara had not instructed her to keep Lily secret from Daniel at all. Clara's final plan was the opposite.

Evelyn unfolded the pages.

Clara's entry from three days before her death read:

I can't keep lying to Daniel anymore. DNA or no DNA, tomorrow night I tell him everything. If I'm wrong, he'll hate me for giving him hope. If I'm right, every day I wait becomes another day I stole from him.

Another entry was addressed directly to Evelyn.

If something happens to me, call Daniel first. Not Dad's lawyers, not Vivian, not Warren. Daniel. He has already lost Lily once without knowing she was alive. Nobody gets to make that choice for him again.

Daniel stopped reading.

For eighteen days after Clara's death, Evelyn had done exactly what Clara told her not to do.

That altered his understanding of his wife too. Clara had delayed telling him for months, which still hurt, but she had finally reached the point of confession before the car crash stopped her. She did not die intending to preserve the secret.

Evelyn's third page contained something even more important.

Clara described a meeting with Vivian Cross.

Vivian claimed Thomas Reed helped falsify the death record only after Meridian's lawyer produced a signed surrender and threatened Clara with a lawsuit for interfering in a completed adoption. Thomas accepted money to stabilize St. Agnes and protected the lie afterward, but according to Vivian, the initial adoption had been arranged before Thomas became involved.

By whom?

Clara had written a name.

PAUL FENWICK.

The Meridian attorney Marcus Hale mentioned in Chapter 4.

Daniel had treated Fenwick as paperwork.

Clara had begun to suspect he was the person who designed the system.
