Chapter 5 - Clara’s Crisis

Clara came two days later.

Not through the door this time.

The locks had been changed.

She stood on my porch wearing sunglasses too large for her face and holding a paper coffee cup like a prop in a scene where she had been wronged.

I answered through the security door with Ava asleep in a sling against my chest.

Clara looked at the lock first.

Then at me.

“Wow,” she said. “You really did lose your mind.”

“What do you need?”

“My kids are humiliated.”

“They’re children. They’ll survive without new phones.”

“You don’t get to judge me. You have one baby and a military husband paying half your life.”

I almost laughed.

Ryan and I had built our life through deployments, missed holidays, careful budgets, and a kind of loneliness Clara had never considered because she thought stability was a gift handed to people who looked composed from the outside.

“My husband is not an ATM either,” I said.

Her face twisted.

“That’s what this is about? You think we use you?”

I did not answer.

Because sometimes a question arrives already carrying its own confession.

Clara’s voice lowered.

“Mom said you moved the money.”

“I did.”

“You had no right.”

“To my own money?”

“To abandon us.”

“There it is,” I said.

“What?”

“The word you all use when I stop paying.”

She stepped closer to the security door.

“You think you’re better than me because you wear a uniform.”

“No. I think I’m responsible for the baby on my chest before I’m responsible for phones your kids do not need.”

Clara’s eyes flicked to Ava then, really seeing her for the first time.

For a second, shame crossed her face.

Then pride covered it.

“Mom says you owe us after everything she did for you.”

“What did she do?”

“She raised you.”

“And now I’m raising Ava.”

Clara looked away.

That sentence landed somewhere neither of us expected.

For years, Clara had been the crisis and I had been the solution. I had never asked what would happen if the solution stopped reporting for duty.

Now we were finding out.

She left without an apology.

But she did not come back.

That mattered.
