Chapter 1 - WHAT CLAIRE PUT INSIDE THE BEAR

Sophie’s scream reached Adrian before he saw her.
“Please! That’s Mommy’s teddy bear!”
He came through the living-room doorway and stopped.
For one impossible second, his mind refused to arrange what was in front of him.
Vanessa had one hand twisted into five-year-old Sophie’s hair.
She was dragging the little girl backward across the cream living-room carpet.
Sophie’s socks slipped beneath her. Tears covered her face. Both hands stretched desperately toward the trash basket beside the marble console.
Inside it lay Claire’s teddy bear.
Small.
Cream-colored.
One ear slightly flatter than the other from years of being held.
Claire had bought it during her pregnancy.
After Claire died, Sophie slept with it every night.
Adrian moved.
“Let her go.”
Vanessa turned.
Too late.
He knocked her hand sharply away from Sophie, pulled his daughter behind him, and crouched long enough to check her.
“Sophie?”
“My head hurts.”
“I know. Stay behind me.”
Vanessa was already moving toward the trash.
Adrian got there first.
He pulled the teddy bear out.
Its back seam had been torn open.
White stuffing protruded through the fabric.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Don’t touch that bear!”
Adrian looked at her.
Not angry yet.
Confused.
That frightened Vanessa more.
He shifted the damaged bear in his hand.
Something small dropped from the stuffing.
A black USB drive landed in his palm.
Vanessa went white.
Adrian slowly stood.
“What is this?”
She said nothing.
Ten minutes later, Sophie stood pressed against Adrian’s side while he inserted the USB into the laptop on the living-room desk.
Vanessa remained near the hallway.
Closer to the exit than before.
The drive contained only three visible files.
One video.
Two encrypted folders.
Adrian opened the video.
Claire appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Thirty-two.
Her hair shorter than Adrian remembered from the last healthy year, but not yet gone from treatment.
She sat in the very living room where Adrian was now standing.
The teddy bear rested in her lap.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Sophie whispered:
“Mommy.”
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“If Adrian is watching this, then somebody found the bear.”
Vanessa took one step backward.
Claire continued.
“I don’t know how much time I have, and I don’t know which records will survive me.”
Adrian glanced toward Vanessa.
She looked at the floor.
Then Claire said:
“The person stealing from Sophie is someone you love.”
Adrian slowly turned his head.
Vanessa was already backing toward the door.
Her face had drained of color.
Hours later, in a formal trust lawyer’s office downtown, the USB sat between Adrian and two stacks of documents.
The attorney had pulled the Carter family trust file.
Claire’s estate file.
Sophie’s beneficiary statements.
Three documents did not match.
Same trust name.
Same investment account.
Same purported authorization.
But Claire’s signatures sat at slightly different angles.
One page contained a handwritten routing instruction in the margin.
Rounded letters.
Wide loops.
A distinctive capital E.
Adrian stared at it.
He knew that handwriting.
The office door opened.
His younger sister walked in.
Elena Carter.
Thirty-six.
Immaculate coat.
Calm face.
Until she saw the USB.
Her eyes locked on it.
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Elena…”
She looked at the papers.
Then at him.
By midnight Adrian had taken Sophie away from the mansion.
Not to a hotel.
Not to the family office.
To the small Carter cabin two counties north, where Claire used to take Sophie in summer because the cell service was terrible and nobody from the company came without complaining.
Adrian had barely put Sophie to bed when metal struck the front-door lock.
BANG.
Again.
BANG.
The frame split.
Elena came through holding a steel crowbar.
Adrian stepped between her and the hallway leading to Sophie’s room.
The USB was clenched in his fist.
Elena’s composure was gone.
“Give me that USB, Adrian!”
“No.”
She raised the crowbar.
Adrian did not move.
Then the bedroom door opened behind him.
“Sophie, stay inside.”
She didn’t.
She stepped into the hall clutching Claire’s damaged teddy bear against her chest.
One seam had been roughly repaired with white thread.
Sophie slipped her hand through it.
Adrian stared.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Elena saw it.
Her entire body stopped.
Sophie looked at her aunt.
“Mommy told me about you.”
Elena’s face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
Sophie pressed the folded note against her chest.
“You know what it says, don’t you?”
May you like
Elena went pale.
And Adrian realized the USB had never been Claire’s only insurance.
