Chapter 2 - The Woman In The Doorway
By the time I carried Lily away from the freezer and wrapped her in my jacket, Evelyn appeared in the doorway between the garage and the house. She wore a beige cardigan, her gray hair neatly brushed, her face arranged into the offended concern she had practiced for years. “What on earth is going on?” she asked, but her eyes went to Lily first, not to the freezer. That one small glance told me more than her words ever could. Lily buried her face against my neck and shook harder. “How long was she in there?” I asked. Evelyn folded her arms. “I don’t know what story she’s telling you now, but she must have climbed in while I was upstairs. You know how dramatic she is.” I turned so she could see Lily’s face. “She’s seven.” Evelyn’s mouth tightened. “Exactly. Seven-year-olds do foolish things.”
That was when I noticed the inside edge of the freezer lid. Beneath the frost, close to the rubber seal, were faint scratch marks. Not one. Not two. Several tiny lines, uneven and desperate, dug into the underside where small fingers had scraped upward. My stomach turned. I pulled out my phone with one hand and called 911. Evelyn stepped forward. “Grant, don’t be ridiculous.” Lily flinched so hard my jacket slipped from her shoulder. I looked at Evelyn and something in my voice went colder than the room. “Stay away from her.” Taylor arrived just before the paramedics did, running in from the driveway with panic on her face and her purse still over one shoulder. “What happened?” she kept asking. But when she moved toward Lily, Lily pressed herself into me and whimpered, “Don’t let Grandma take me.” Taylor froze. At the hospital, the ER doctor said Lily was cold-stressed but stable. Then a pediatric nurse asked Lily gently if this had happened before. Lily stared at the blanket over her knees and nodded. “When I’m bad,” she whispered. “Grandma says the cold helps me think.” Taylor went white. I felt the world tilt. Because this was not an accident. It was a routine.
