Chapter 5 - FRIDAY WAS NOT ABOUT A DINNER PARTY

Friday was the deadline on a transfer Daniel had been preparing.

Not a sale.

Something more carefully disguised.

Over the previous year, he had established a small property company with Patricia.

Daniel had persuaded Emily to sign documents he described as refinancing paperwork and liability protection.

Some of those documents were legitimate.

Others were incomplete when she signed them.

That mattered.

Because blanks had later been filled.

Pages had been substituted.

One signature had been electronically duplicated.

Claire discovered enough by Thursday afternoon to tell me not to confront Daniel.

“Rebecca, listen carefully. Do not warn him what we know.”

“What happens Friday?”

“He appears to believe a transfer becomes final.”

“Can he do that?”

“Not the way he’s attempting it.”

I looked toward the bedroom where Emily was sleeping.

“What if she signed?”

“That depends on what she signed, what she was told, and whether the documents match what was later submitted.”

My stomach turned.

“Could she lose the house?”

“Not by Friday.”

The relief almost made me sit down.

Claire continued.

“But the property may be only part of this.”

“What does that mean?”

“We’re seeing debts connected to Daniel’s company.”

I went still.

“Debts?”

“Rebecca, I need Emily to authorize us to review several records. I don’t want to speculate before we verify.”

For the first time, Patricia’s words sounded different.

The house will finally be ours.

Not because they wanted somewhere to live.

Because they needed something.

Collateral.

Equity.

Control.

Emily listened quietly when Claire explained what she had found.

When Claire finished, my daughter asked one question.

“Was Daniel planning to tell me?”

Claire did not answer.

She did not have to.

Emily turned toward the window.

I expected tears.

Instead, she whispered, “He kept saying Friday.”

“What did he say about it?” I asked.

“That after Friday, things would be easier. That I wouldn’t have to worry about decisions anymore.”

My skin went cold.

Daniel had not merely been controlling his wife.

May you like

He had been racing toward a deadline.

And Emily leaving the house three days before it arrived had endangered whatever he was trying to complete.
