Chapter 13 - DEREK'S OFFER

Derek violated the protection order eleven days later.
He did not approach Milo.
He approached Savannah.
She was walking to her car after work when he stepped from behind a parked truck.
Savannah froze.
“I called the police already.”
Derek lifted both hands.
“I just want to talk.”
“You have about thirty seconds before they get here.”
He looked thinner.
Desperate.
“The trust money wasn't my idea.”
Savannah laughed.
“That's what you're going with?”
“Your mother signed everything.”
“And you spent it.”
“She spent plenty too.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
Derek reached into his jacket.
Savannah stepped backward.
He pulled out a flash drive.
“Because Janice is going to blame everything on me.”
“She should blame plenty on you.”
“You think your mother is some helpless victim?”
Savannah said nothing.
Derek held out the drive.
“She knew exactly what she was doing.”
“What is on it?”
“Bank records. Emails.”
Savannah didn't take it.
Derek placed it on the hood of her car.
Then he said:
“Ask her why she needed Milo's money.”
Savannah's expression changed.
“Needed it for what?”
Derek smiled bitterly.
“There you go.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Derek walked away.
He was arrested before he reached the corner.
The flash drive became evidence.
What investigators found made everything worse.
Some money had funded Derek's business.
But almost sixty thousand dollars had gone somewhere else.
A private account controlled only by Janice.
Savannah stared at the transaction history.
“What was she doing with it?”
Detective Ruiz turned the monitor.
One payment appeared repeatedly.

A private investigation firm.
