Chapter 8 - CLAIRE’S VERSION

Claire agreed to a recorded interview that evening.

Her lawyer sat beside her.

Mark and Emily watched from another room.

Claire looked smaller without the certainty she had carried into Mark’s house.

Harris began simply.

“Why did you help Julia?”

“Because Grant was preparing to blame Mark.”

“How?”

“He reused signature pages.”

Mark looked toward Emily.

Claire continued.

“Mark signed corporate financing acknowledgments. Grant attached copies to trust documents to make it look as if Mark knew the source of the funds.”

“Did Robert know?”

“Yes.”

“Did Mark?”

“Not when the transfers started.”

Emily exhaled.

Not complete exoneration.

But an answer.

Claire admitted approving three later transactions herself.

By then she knew they were improper.

“Why?”

“Because the company would have failed.”

Harris did not react.

Claire continued.

“Robert kept saying we were borrowing from ourselves.”

“The Bennett Trust wasn't yours.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then.”

Claire looked down.

“Yes.”

That was better.

Not innocence.

Responsibility.

Julia discovered the scheme and confronted Claire.

Claire broke.

She gave Julia internal ledgers and copied the garage recording after Julia said someone had entered her car.

“What did you think Grant was doing near it?”

“I didn't know.”

“Did you think he might hurt her?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Mark turned away.

Harris asked why she surrendered the drive after Julia died.

“Robert came to my house.”

“What did he say?”

“That Julia's death was an accident. That if I created another explanation, police would investigate the trust fraud and every signature on it.”

“Your signatures.”

“And Mark’s.”

“So you protected yourself.”

“Yes.”

Claire did not hide from it.

For six years Robert controlled her through that choice.

He promoted her.

Paid bonuses.

Placed her on the company board.

Every benefit became another reason not to speak.

Then Mara sent Emily the birthday packet.

“How did you know?” Harris asked.

“Emily texted me.”

Claire had panicked.

She called Grant.

Grant called Robert.

Robert ordered her to retrieve the key.

“No police. No lawyers. No scene.”

“Why take Grant?”

“I didn't.”

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“He told me Robert wanted him there.”

Harris asked what happened inside.

Claire and Emily talked first.

Emily showed her Julia’s letter.

Claire asked for the key.

Emily refused.

Grant locked the door.

“He said Emily was a minor and none of the documents legally belonged to her yet.”

Emily’s jaw tightened as she listened.

“Then he searched her bag.”

“What happened when she stopped him?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“He grabbed her.”

“Did you intervene?”

“Not enough.”

“Did you restrain Emily?”

Claire’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

That was the betrayal stripped of excuses.

Emily had opened the door because Julia once trusted Claire.

Claire had used that trust to get inside.

Harris asked why Grant became violent.

“He thought she had already opened Box 611.”

“Why did that matter?”

“Because Robert believed the box contained trust records.”

“Only trust records?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Here came the midpoint reversal.

“Robert didn't know about the garage copy.”

Mark turned back toward the screen.

Claire continued.

“He thought Julia's evidence was financial.”

“Grant?”

“I think Grant knew she had suspected the car.”

“Did Robert order Julia harmed?”

“I never heard him do that.”

“Did you ever hear Grant discuss her crash?”

Claire thought.

“Once.”

“When?”

“About six months after she died. We were arguing. I told him Julia had been right about him.”

“What did he say?”

Claire looked through the interview-room glass as if she could see Mark.

“He said, ‘Julia would still be alive if she'd stayed in her lane.’”

Harris wrote it down.

Then Claire added:

“There's something else.”

Grant had returned to Dawson Building Supply the night after Julia’s funeral.

Claire saw him leave Robert’s office carrying a yellow legal envelope.

She asked Robert what it contained.

“He said Julia had kept notes that could ruin all of us.”

“Where is it now?”

“I don't know.”

“What was written on it?”

Claire remembered.

J.D. — COLLINS — VEHICLE.

Mark understood the initials.

Julia Dawson.

Nate Collins.

Vehicle.

Julia had assembled a file about the car before she died.

Grant took it.

And Robert watched him leave with it.

For six years they had been chasing a missing video.

Now they knew Julia had created something stronger.

A mechanic file.

The new objective was no longer to prove someone entered Julia’s car.

It was to find the evidence she had already gathered before Grant destroyed it.
