Chapter 14 - THE FIRST DEPLOYMENT

The 2009 POA should have stayed an old family embarrassment.

It didn't.

Daniel asked civilian counsel to review every transaction Richard Carter executed under Daniel's authority during that first Afghanistan rotation.

Most were ordinary.

Tax filing.

Insurance renewal.

Equipment lease.

One $2.4 million Carter Ridge loan.

Then another document.

A transfer of Daniel's personal minority interest in a warehouse partnership into the family holding company.

Value at the time:

About $480,000.

Daniel did not remember approving it.

The transaction had been financially favorable eventually.

No obvious loss.

Still his property.

Attorney asked:

“Did you know this happened?”

“No.”

“Did you receive equivalent shares in Carter Ridge?”

“Yes.”

“Then economically you may not have been harmed.”

Daniel looked at him.

“That's not my question.”

Good.

The closing packet contained the broad 2009 POA.

This time the signature looked original.

Not reassembled.

Could Daniel have signed it?

Probably.

He was twenty-six.

Packing for deployment.

His father handled everything.

Daniel remembered sitting in an Army legal office signing a stack.

He remembered saying:

“Dad knows what to do.”

The attorney asked:

“Did you read the schedule?”

Daniel laughed once.

“No.”

There.

The family pattern was older because Daniel had once willingly created it.

Broad authority.

Trust Richard.

Leave.

Then years later, Daniel became more cautious and imposed limits.

Richard apparently disliked the limits.

Vanessa had learned from him.

Then they found Richard's old email to Vanessa.

Daniel put a cap on the new one. He's getting difficult about control. Probably good for him. Bad for us.

Sent five years before Richard died.

Vanessa replied:

Then ask him directly.

Richard:

He'll say no.

Vanessa:

Then the answer is no.

Daniel stared.

“Mom wrote that.”

Yes.

At least once, Vanessa had defended his boundary against Richard.

That complicated the family mythology again.

Then three years later:

Richard to Vanessa:

Need Daniel's authority for Parkstone. Use old continuity if current is narrow.

Vanessa:

No. He changed it for a reason.

Again.

Vanessa had resisted the exact tactic she later used.

What changed?

Richard died.

Vanessa became chair.

Carter Ridge became hers to save.

Pressure did not invent her values.

It moved the point where she abandoned them.

Then Daniel noticed an attachment to Richard's email.

A scanned photograph.

Family study.

Richard at his desk.

A military duffel on the floor.

Army uniform visible through the doorway.

Daniel zoomed.

Not himself.

He had been overseas when the photograph was taken.

Daniel looked at the date.

Same week as the Parkstone financing dispute.

Another uniformed soldier had been inside the Carter home while Richard was trying to use Daniel's deployment authority.

Rachel came behind him.

“What?”

Daniel pointed.

“You see him?”

“Yes.”

“Who is it?”

“Can't tell.”

The man's face was outside the frame.

Only shoulder.

Sleeve.

Duffel.

Rachel went quiet.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“The bag.”

“What about it?”

Rachel enlarged the image.

Brown canvas duffel.

One pale repair stitch across the side handle.

She looked toward the guest room.

Owen's duffel had the same repair.

Daniel stared.

No.

Lots of old military bags were repaired.

He called Owen anyway.

Sent the photograph.

Owen responded twenty minutes later.

That isn't mine.

May you like

Then another message.

But I know whose it might be.
