Chapter 8 - The Threat Revealed

"Get out of my house, Victor," I commanded, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet growl as I stepped directly between Victor and the staircase, blocking his line of sight to Clara.

Dominic and four of my personal security guards immediately drew their concealed firearms, their weapons pointed directly at Victor’s men.

Victor didn't look at the guns pointed at his chest. He kept his eyes fixed on the shadow of the upper landing where Clara stood, her hands trembling as she held the tea tray.

"I knew about Sarah Reed, Bennett," Victor whispered, a slow, terrifying smile spreading across his face. "Thirty years ago, my uncle kept files on every woman your father touched. We knew Marcus had a woman in North Carolina. We thought he killed her when the baby was born."

He looked back at me, his eyes gleaming with malicious delight.

"He didn't kill her, did he? He hid her. He had an illegitimate daughter."

"She is a private employee of this estate," I lied smoothly, without a flicker of hesitation. "And whatever fairy tales your uncle kept in his files are irrelevant to the current balance of power in this city."

Victor laughed—a loud, booming sound that echoed through the marble foyer like a death knell.

"An employee? Bennett, that girl is Marcus Hale’s biological daughter! Under the original founding agreement of the Eastern Commercial Banking Syndicate—the agreement signed by your father and my uncle—any unacknowledged illegitimate heir creates an immediate freeze on all corporate asset transfers until paternity and trust distribution are settled in court!"

My blood turned to ice.

I knew the provisions of the founding agreement by heart. It was an ancient, rigid legal contract designed to prevent rival families from seizing control of shared assets through sudden assassinations. If a founding member died leaving an unacknowledged blood heir whose rights were disputed, all corporate accounts, shipping leases, and banking operations were automatically frozen until the dispute was resolved.

If Victor filed a formal legal challenge using Clara’s existence as leverage, he wouldn't just force a blood test—he would paralyze the Hale Syndicate for months. Millions of dollars in daily trade would grind to a halt. Our rival factions would swarm our territories like wolves while our funds were locked up in probate court.

"You have no proof," I stated coldly.

"I don't need proof to file an injunction, Bennett," Victor sneered, turning toward the front doors. "I just need a reasonable claim. And looking at that girl's face up there... any judge in this state will grant an immediate asset freeze within twenty-four hours."

He paused at the door, looking back at me with triumph in his dark eyes.

"Enjoy your remaining hours of wealth, Bennett. Tomorrow morning, the Moretti family takes control of the shipping ports."
