Chapter 5 - CLARA CAME TO THE HOTEL

Clara showed up on the third morning.
No makeup.
Jeans.
Hair tied back.
Nothing like the glamorous young woman I had seen laughing beneath the chandeliers.
She stood outside my hotel room.
“Dad?”
I opened the door.
She started crying immediately.
“I didn’t know.”
I said nothing.
“Please.”
“Did you know they were living in the shed?”
Her face crumpled.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt.
“Then don’t tell me you knew nothing.”
“I thought they chose it.”
I stared at her.
“Who chooses a shed?”
“Grandma said Mom couldn’t afford rent and didn’t want to leave.”
“Did you ask your mother?”
Clara looked down.
“No.”
“Did you ask Ethan?”
“No.”
“Why?”
She started crying harder.
“Because Grandma said Mom hated me.”
Eleanor appeared behind me.
Clara froze.
My wife looked at our daughter.
“I never hated you.”
Clara’s entire face changed.
Margaret had told her that Eleanor resented the money spent on Clara’s education.
That she blamed her for the family’s financial problems.
That she did not want Clara around Ethan because Clara was “spoiled.”
Some of those arguments had roots in real tension.
Eleanor had questioned Clara’s spending before.
Margaret turned those moments into a complete story.
Clara believed her grandmother because Margaret paid the bills.
Or appeared to.
“Grandma said Dad wasn’t sending much anymore,” Clara whispered.
I walked to the desk.
Took out copies of the transfers.
“I never stopped.”
Clara stared.
Then she sat down.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“She told me my tuition came from Grandpa’s old trust.”
“It didn’t.”
Her mouth opened.
“Your apartment?”
I continued.
“Several payments came from the same account.”
“The car?”
“Possibly.”
She covered her face.
Eleanor stepped toward her.
Clara immediately pulled back.
“I’m sorry.”
Eleanor stopped.
Not cold.
Careful.
“You should be.”
Clara nodded.
That was important.
No instant forgiveness.
No pretending she had been completely innocent just because she had also been manipulated.
She had seen her mother and brother being treated badly.
She chose the easier explanation.
That was hers to own.
The source of the money was Margaret’s.
May you like
The silence was Clara’s.
Both mattered.
