Chapter 12 - THE REPORT THAT DISAPPEARED

The federal examiner was named Martin Doyle.

He died eleven years earlier, but government archives preserved his correspondence. Rebecca filed a records request supported by evidence of historic bank fraud. The response took four days.

Those four days became the lowest point.

Ward-Hale’s successor company publicly attacked Evelyn’s reopening of the case, suggesting age-related confusion. Price’s arrest triggered questions about her personal finances. Mark’s café suffered harassment from people who believed the sandwich incident had been staged for publicity.

Noah remained unemployed despite Mark’s offer to return because he no longer trusted whether accepting the job meant becoming part of someone else’s narrative.

Lisa stopped answering calls for two days after reporters appeared outside her home.

Evelyn looked smaller for the first time, not because she resumed the frail act from the café but because the structure protecting her wealth had become evidence against her.

“What if Michael’s report proves I knew more than I remember?” she asked Noah.

He almost offered comfort.

Then decided honesty was better.

“Then we deal with that.”

She nodded.

That answer seemed to steady her.

The government archive arrived Friday evening.

Martin Doyle had indeed received Michael’s report.

But not the final version.

The cover letter said:

Attached preliminary summary. Full supporting package to follow after internal witness confirms executive authorization.

The supporting package never arrived.

Doyle opened an inquiry anyway.

Three days later, Richard Ward’s attorneys contacted his agency and claimed the report came from a terminated employee retaliating against Ward-Hale. They provided documents showing Michael had signed the disputed transfer.

The inquiry was closed pending further evidence.

Michael died two weeks later.

Noah stared at the timeline.

His father had been close.

Not to winning.

To being heard.

Then the detail Price overlooked appeared inside Doyle’s handwritten notes.

He wrote one phrase beside Michael’s name.

WITNESS = E.W.?

Evelyn.

Michael apparently told the federal examiner Evelyn could confirm executive authorization.

Evelyn had never been contacted.

Why?

Doyle’s next line explained.

CALL RECEIVED — WOMAN CLAIMING E.W. STATES PARKER LYING. DO NOT CONTACT FAMILY.

Evelyn went pale.

“I never called him.”

The phone record attached to the note showed the call came from Ward-Hale’s executive residence.

Charles Ward’s house.

Someone impersonated Evelyn.

Anita Ross, Charles’s old secretary, still remembered who used the study phone that afternoon.

Richard.

But he could not sound like Evelyn.

Noah asked whether any woman was with him.

Anita closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Richard’s wife, Patricia.

No one had mentioned her because she died fifteen years earlier and never held an executive title.

Patricia Ward had made the call.

Why would she help silence Michael?

Rebecca traced her finances.

Patricia held no Ward-Hale office.

She did hold something else.

Twenty percent of Meridian Capital through a marital trust created days after the recycled investment.

The missing investor was never Delaney alone.

Patricia was another hidden beneficiary.

Richard used his wife to impersonate Evelyn and shut down the federal inquiry.

The final piece was not a random stranger.

It was someone who had been present in family photographs all along and mattered precisely because nobody considered her operational.

The conspiracy’s last original participant had been identified.

Now they needed Michael’s supporting package.

If he ever created it.

Lisa remembered something after hearing Doyle’s note.

The day before Michael died, he took Noah to the public library and spent almost two hours at a photocopy machine.

“He said he was making sure one bad copy couldn’t ruin everything.”

Noah looked at her.

“Where did the copies go?”

Lisa did not know.

Then Noah remembered a childhood object his mother still kept.

A set of library books Michael never returned.

One was unusually heavy.
