I Am Exactly Where I Am Meant to Be

I knew what I was walking into.

What I did not know was how quickly he would show me.

He was standing at the edge of the dock when I arrived, arms folded across his chest, Trident on his soaked uniform catching the dock lights. He looked at my worn rain gear, my clipboard, the absence of anyone behind me who might change the calculation. He looked at me the way men like Rawlins look at women they have already decided present no consequence — with the particular ease of someone who has never been wrong about that assessment and has stopped checking.

He moved into my path when I stepped toward the equipment racks.

"You lost, ma'am?"

I did not answer immediately. Men like him expect anger because anger lets them call you emotional. Silence makes them wonder who taught you patience.

A SEAL near the rear shifted on his boots. His name tape said Parker. His eyes moved to my collar for a fraction of a second, then away in a movement that looked almost like shame. Not discipline. Not loyalty. Something older and more specific — the expression of a young person who knows what they are watching and has not yet decided whether knowing is the same as being responsible for it.

Rawlins saw the look. His smile sharpened.

"You deaf too? I asked if you were lost."

I bent and picked up my cover from the dock boards, wrung the water from the brim once, and looked at him. "No."

One word cut the laughter clean in half.

"No what?"

"No, Senior Chief. I am exactly where I am meant to be."

He stepped closer. "Lady, you walked onto a restricted SEAL training pier in the middle of a night evolution. That makes you stupid, dangerous, or both."

I moved past him toward the equipment racks. Two of his men shifted with me, not blocking openly, just shaping the space around my body in the practiced, deniable way that never appears in reports because every person doing it knows how to describe it as coincidence later.
