Chapter 7 - The Final Thumbprint

Eleanor took two measured steps toward the bedside. Her shoes made no sound on the floor. She reached out with a manicured hand, her nails painted a pristine, nude shade, and gently touched the corner of the heavy transfer document that lay beneath Caleb’s ink-stained hand.

Seraphina flinched, lunging forward instinctively. “Don’t touch that! It’s signed! It’s notarized! It belongs to my son!”

Eleanor did not even turn her head. She simply raised one finger, and the sheer authority radiating from her posture made Seraphina freeze mid-stride, her mouth hanging open, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

“That fingerprint,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping into an intimate, velvety register that forced Caleb to strain his ears against the frantic beeping of the monitor, “was all I needed.”

Caleb stared at her, his pale eyes bulging beneath his gray brow. His mouth worked frantically, but only a dry rasp escaped his lips. “What… did… I sign?”

Eleanor reached into the hidden pocket of her gown and produced a thin, polished slate of black glass—an encrypted tablet. With a light tap of her thumb, the screen illuminated, displaying an identical copy of the twenty-four-page document that lay on Caleb’s bed.

“You didn’t sign the beneficiary annex drafted by your personal attorney, Caleb,” Eleanor explained calmly. “Your attorney was replaced this morning at eight o’clock, following his indictment by the Southern District of New York for assisting in international money laundering. The documents placed before you ten minutes ago were not the deeds of gift to Seraphina’s trust.”

She smiled—a slow, breathtaking, terrible smile that sent a shudder through the very foundation of the room.

“You just signed a full, unconditional confession of corporate embezzlement and tax evasion, coupled with a personal assumption of eighty-five million dollars in toxic debt owed to an offshore consortium. And, by applying your certified biometric thumbprint to that document, you irrevocably authorized the transfer of all assets held in your private names, your mother’s trusts, and Seraphina’s offshore holdings directly into the receivership of the primary creditor.”

Eleanor paused, leaning down until her face was barely six inches from Caleb’s ear. Her breath smelled faintly of mint and bergamot.

“And the primary creditor, Caleb… is me.”
