Chapter 5 - The Soldier He Had Already Hurt
The restricted file contained more than Maya’s evaluation.
Harrison removed a second folder.
It belonged to Specialist Aaron Pike.
Pike had trained under Bennett eight months earlier.
During an after-hours session, Bennett repeatedly forced him to continue after he reported pain in his shoulder. When Pike refused another round, Bennett accused him of weakness in front of the unit.
Pike continued.
His shoulder injury required surgery.
The official report said he had fallen during individual conditioning.
Maya had found him alone in the medical waiting area two days later. He admitted what happened but begged her not to report Bennett because he feared retaliation.
She encouraged him to document everything.
She also preserved messages in which Bennett warned Pike that “quitters don’t belong in this unit.”
Pike later transferred to another installation.
The complaint remained unresolved because two witnesses changed their statements.
Both were standing near the combat mat now.
Harrison called their names.
Neither answered immediately.
Then one soldier stepped forward.
“Sir, Specialist Pike told the truth.”
The second followed.
“Bennett told us we’d lose training opportunities if we backed him.”
Murmurs moved through the crowd.
Bennett looked toward his own unit.
“You’re going to believe her over me?”
Harrison closed the folder.
“This is not about choosing between personalities. It is about evidence.”
He pointed toward the mat.
“And five hundred witnesses just watched you repeat the same behavior.”
