Chapter 6 - The Tenth Row
After the ceremony, guests moved into the reception area beneath chandeliers and flags. Marcus stood near the tenth row longer than necessary, waiting for the old reflex to return—the one where he entered a room and people adjusted around him.
This time, no one did.
A brigadier general he had hoped to impress walked past him to congratulate Evelyn. A senior policy director asked her about supply-chain doctrine. The FEMA administrator introduced her to a governor’s chief of staff. Marcus watched his wife become the center of conversations he could not enter through rank or marriage.
Finally, he approached.
“Evelyn.”
She turned, citation folder held against her side.
“We need to talk.”
“Yes,” she said. “But not here.”
The answer was not harsh. That made it harder to challenge.
He lowered his voice. “You could have told me.”
“I did.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“I told you about the operation. I told you about the hospital capacity issue. I told you why I missed your dinner.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
“I know.” Evelyn’s eyes met his. “You mean I could have told you in a way that made you care.”
Marcus had no immediate answer.
Nearby, General Cole approached, then stopped when he sensed the conversation. Evelyn gave him a small nod, letting him know she was fine.
Marcus noticed that too.
Other men respected her boundary without needing to own it.
“I didn’t know this was tonight,” he said.
“You didn’t ask why I received a separate envelope. You told me not to embarrass you.”
Color rose in his face.
“I was trying to protect my command.”
“No,” Evelyn said quietly. “You were protecting your image of yourself.”
That struck deeper than anger would have.
For years, Marcus had believed condescension was leadership when directed at people close enough to absorb it privately. He had warned his wife at the door because he thought she existed inside his public story.
Now the public story had changed.
