Chapter 5 - The Doorway

Garrick arrived just before dusk.

I watched his SUV roll through the gate and stop in front of my mother’s mansion, where I had brought her after the emergency order. The chandelier glowed above the marble foyer. Helen stood near the staircase, pale and shaking, one hand at her throat.

“Stay behind me,” I told her.

“You don’t have to face him alone.”

“I’m not.”

She did not understand until the knock came from behind us.

One single knock.

I opened the interior hall door, and Ethan Reyes stepped in with a federal team in dark tactical clothing. No shouting. No chaos. No performance. Just calm precision spreading through the foyer like the room had been waiting for them.

Then the front door opened.

Garrick stepped inside, tense and furious.

He saw my mother first.

Then me.

Then the agents.

His expression shifted from arrogance to calculation to disbelief.

For one second, he tried to smile.

“Rachel,” he said. “This is unnecessary.”

He moved as if to reach into his jacket.

I stepped in fast, controlled his arm, turned his balance, and brought him safely to the marble floor before he understood I had moved.

“Don’t move.”

The agents secured the room around us.

Helen covered her mouth.

Garrick stared up at me, stunned. “Who are you?”

I leaned slightly closer.

“The woman you underestimated.”

One agent stepped forward with a blurred evidence folder.

“The evidence is complete,” he said.

Garrick tried to look toward Helen, but I kept him still without forceful struggle.

His confidence drained in real time.

For years, he had taught my mother that help would never arrive.

Now the room was full of it.
