Chapter 2 - Donna’s House, Donna’s Rules

Brian and I had been married for seven years, and for most of those years I told myself Donna was only difficult because she loved too hard.

That was the phrase everyone used for her.

She loves hard.

It sounded better than controlling, better than cruel, better than the truth. Donna loved appearances. She loved obedience. She loved the family image she had built in her pale suburban dining room, under her chandelier, with polished silverware and rules nobody admitted existed until someone broke one.

When Lily was born, Donna became worse.

She corrected how I held the baby, how I dressed her, how quickly I comforted her, how much noise I allowed her to make. If Lily cried during family dinners, Donna blamed my anxiety. If Lily got sick, Donna accused me of coddling her. If I took her to urgent care, Donna would tell everyone I was “one of those mothers who needs attention through her child.”

Brian rarely defended me. At first, he said he did not want to create drama. Later, he said I needed to stop interpreting everything as an attack. By the time Lily turned four, his mother’s opinion had become the weather inside our marriage. Everything adjusted around it.

That winter dinner was supposed to celebrate Donna’s birthday. I had cooked most of the food while she stood beside me giving instructions and pretending it was help. Lily had been quiet all afternoon, cheeks flushed, eyes glassy. By the time guests arrived, she was shaking.

I told Brian we needed to leave before dessert.

He told me his mother would never forgive the insult.

I said Lily needed a doctor more than Donna needed applause.

That was when he grabbed my wrist near the hallway. I pulled free, reached for the keys, and told him I was taking our daughter to the hospital with or without him.

He slapped me before I made it to the door.

Later, people would try to make that moment sound complicated.

It was not.

A father chose his mother’s pride over his child’s fever.

Then he hit the woman trying to get her help.
