Chapter 3 - The Knock at the Door

The hard knock came again.

Daniel turned toward the door, still pale from hearing the word Colonel attached to my name. Vanessa stood halfway between the couch and kitchen, her mouth slightly open, like a woman realizing the maid had owned the house all along.

I picked up my overnight bag from beside the island.

Daniel reached for my arm.

He stopped before touching me.

Good.

At least the call had taught him one fast lesson.

“Emily,” he said, voice lower now. “Let’s not make this bigger.”

I looked at the wedding ring on the island.

“You made it exactly as big as your hand.”

The knock came a third time.

“Who is that?” Vanessa snapped, suddenly angry again now that fear needed somewhere to go.

I walked to the door and opened it.

Major Alicia Grant stood on the porch in civilian clothes, her dark blazer buttoned against the evening wind. Beside her was Staff Sergeant Nolan Pierce, holding a folder under one arm. Both had been at the wedding. Both had watched Daniel’s family treat my career like a costume. Both had told me to call if the new house became uncomfortable.

I had not called.

The video call with General Carter had.

Alicia looked at my cheek first.

Her expression did not change, but I knew her well enough to recognize controlled fury.

“Ma’am,” she said carefully, “General Carter asked us to stop by with the signed packet.”

That was the professional sentence.

Then her eyes moved past me to Daniel.

“And to make sure you were safe.”

Daniel stiffened.

“This is a private matter.”

Nolan looked at him with the calm disbelief of a man hearing a weak argument arrive overdressed.

“No, sir. A colonel with visible injury after a domestic confrontation is not something we ignore.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“Visible injury? It was barely anything.”

Alicia’s eyes shifted to her.

Nobody had to tell Vanessa she had spoken too soon. The room told her. Daniel told her by the way his shoulders dropped. Even the television seemed too loud now, glowing blurred and ridiculous behind her.

I touched my cheek again, not because it hurt more, but because I wanted Daniel to watch me acknowledge what he had done.

Alicia stepped closer, voice low.

“Colonel Harper, do you need medical attention?”

“No.”

“Do you want us to call law enforcement?”

Daniel inhaled sharply.

I looked at him.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at the dinner in the trash.

“Not tonight,” I said. “But I want a documented witness statement.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

May you like

I raised one hand.

“You taught me documentation matters.”
