Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Always Sounded Concerned
Lorraine Rowan never raised her voice when she hurt people. That was part of what made her dangerous.
She spoke in careful tones, wore pale cardigans, volunteered at church fundraisers, and called every insult “concern.” When Caleb introduced Hannah to her three years earlier, Lorraine smiled, hugged her politely, and later told Caleb that Hannah seemed sweet but fragile.
At first, Caleb thought fragile meant gentle.
Over time, he realized his mother meant unsuitable.
Lorraine criticized Hannah’s cooking by offering recipes. She criticized her work by asking whether administrative consulting was “really steady enough.” When Hannah became pregnant after two years of trying, Lorraine began calling twice a day, claiming she only wanted to make sure Hannah was being sensible.
If Hannah rested, she was lazy. If she worked, she was reckless. If she worried, she was dramatic. If she stayed quiet, she was hiding something.
Caleb defended Hannah in moments, never in patterns. He would say, “Mom means well,” or “Don’t let her get to you,” then act surprised when Hannah looked lonelier afterward.
The month before the emergency, Lorraine’s comments shifted.
She started mentioning Dr. Elias Morgan, the obstetrician temporarily covering for Hannah’s regular doctor. Lorraine said it was strange that Hannah had “so many appointments.” Strange that a male doctor was involved. Strange that Hannah always took her phone into the other room when the clinic called.
Hannah told Caleb the appointments were normal because her pregnancy had recently become high risk. Caleb believed her, but belief without protection had not been enough. He still let Lorraine hover. He still answered her calls when Hannah begged for quiet. He still treated his mother as an irritation instead of a threat.
Then his work trip changed.
A construction inspection in Savannah finished early, and Caleb booked the first flight home to Charleston. His phone died during the last leg, and he decided not to turn it on until after the surprise. He bought flowers, breakfast, and a tiny stuffed rabbit for the nursery.
While he was doing that, Hannah was alone in their bedroom, calling him again and again because she had started bleeding and the baby had stopped moving.
When he didn’t answer, she called Lorraine.
