Chapter 7 - Cancun Without Credit

Cancun did not stay luxurious for long.
Henry and Marissa were moved from their suite after the incidentals failed. The private dinner reservation was canceled. The resort placed a hold requiring a valid payment method, and Henry’s personal debit card could not cover the charges he had already promised. Marissa’s cards were nearly maxed out. Within two days, the trip that had begun with champagne and betrayal became a series of lobby arguments, declined payments, and increasingly desperate calls to people who had not agreed to finance adultery.
I knew only what came through documentation and the occasional message Henry was foolish enough to send. Caroline told me not to enjoy it too much. I told her I would try. I did not try very hard.
The real turning point came when Henry attempted to claim I had cut off “shared marital funds” needed for travel home. Caroline responded through counsel with a breakdown of accounts: which were mine before marriage, which authorized cards he had used, which charges occurred after he sent the abandonment message, and which funds remained available in his personal accounts. She also included a polite note explaining that leaving the marital residence voluntarily and declaring in writing that he was “not coming back” made his lockout claim significantly weaker.
Marissa tried to call me from an unknown number. I answered once. “Elaine,” she said, voice trembling with anger, “you’re punishing me like I was some stranger.” I stood in my kitchen, looking at the empty chair where she used to sit. “You made yourself one.” Silence. Then she said, “We fell in love.” “No, Marissa. You fell into my accounts.”
She cried then, or performed crying. I could no longer tell, and the distinction no longer mattered. She said Henry had promised her the business would be funded, that the house would be refinanced, that I was cold and controlling and would rather pay him to leave than endure scandal. I almost thanked her for confirming the strategy, but Caroline had trained me well. I simply said, “Send that in writing.”

She hung up.
The following morning, Henry finally returned to the United States alone. Marissa stayed behind with a friend of a friend, according to Lily’s second statement. Their grand escape had lasted less than four days. Mine had begun the moment I wrote good luck.
