Chapter 1 - The Stop on County Road 114

Deputy Wesley Higgins pulled me over at 11:37 a.m. on County Road 114.

The Arizona heat came up through the soles of my sneakers before he even reached my window.

My old Honda ticked softly on the shoulder, paint faded, dashboard cracked, rear bumper dented from a parking lot accident I never bothered to fix. It was exactly the kind of car people looked at once and decided they understood the driver.

That was the point.

I kept both hands on the wheel.

Visible.

Still.

Controlled.

Higgins walked slowly, one hand near his belt, sunglasses reflecting my face back at me.

“You lost, lady?” he asked.

I looked ahead through the windshield.

“No.”

His smile tightened.

That was the first answer he didn’t like.

He asked for my license and registration. I gave them to him without sudden movement. He studied my Los Angeles address, my gray T-shirt, my jeans, my scuffed sneakers.

Then he looked past me toward the distant perimeter road of Vanden Ridge Air Base.

“What kind of business you got out here?”

“Driving through.”

He leaned closer.

“People don’t just drive through here.”

I knew that was not true.

He knew it too.

But men like Higgins did not always need facts.

Sometimes they only needed a story that made their power feel clean.
