Chapter 1 - The Money

Nathan Whitaker threw a stack of money into the air like paper could replace a family.

Bills scattered through the bright mansion foyer, fluttering between the marble floor and the grand staircase while my husband stood in his dark suit, breathing hard, furious that I had not collapsed the way he expected. Vanessa Monroe stood behind him in a burgundy dress, one hand at her throat, her perfect confidence beginning to crack.

I held our seven-year-old son, Caleb, close against me.

Nathan pointed at us. “Take the money and disappear.”

I did not flinch.

“You’re not buying our silence.”

His laugh was sharp and ugly. He gestured toward Caleb as if our son were a damaged item on a contract. “That boy is your problem.”

Caleb’s fingers tightened around my sleeve, but his face stayed serious. Slowly, he lifted a small black notebook from between us.

Vanessa’s eyes moved to it.

Her expression changed.

Caleb looked down at the notebook, then up at his father. “Dad… page twelve doesn’t match.”

The money stopped falling.

Nathan froze.

For one long second, the mansion was silent except for the soft whisper of bills settling across the marble. I looked at Caleb’s notebook, then at the thick divorce folder Nathan had thrown at me like a purchase order.

My son had seen something.

Something Nathan had not expected anyone to notice.

I took the notebook gently from Caleb’s hand and looked straight at my husband.

“Then we’ll let the judge read it.”

Nathan’s rage collapsed into panic.

And Vanessa took one step back.
