Chapter 6 - The Bride Learns the Truth

Back in the ballroom, Dominic tried to regain control.

“This woman is under psychiatric care,” he announced. “She should not be near the baby.”

A few guests stepped backward from Vivienne.

Fiona handed the lead detective a court order.

“Sophia Hale remains in her mother’s lawful custody. Mr. Hale’s emergency petition was denied this afternoon after submission of new evidence.”

Claire stared at Dominic.

“You said you had custody.”

“I was protecting you from the details.”

“Were you engaged to me before she gave birth?”

Dominic said nothing.

Vivienne placed the envelope on the cake table.

Inside were hotel invoices, deleted messages, trust documents, medical reports, and a certified transcript of the recording.

Claire opened the first page.

Her hands began shaking.

“This wedding was booked in August.”

Dominic reached for the envelope.

A detective stepped between them.

“Do not touch the evidence.”

Beatrice pushed through the guests.

“This is a private family matter.”

Fiona turned toward her.

“Leaving a newborn and her mother outside during an extreme-weather emergency is not private.”

Dominic’s voice rose.

“She walked away!”

Vivienne removed a small audio player from her pocket.

She did not play the entire recording.

Only twelve seconds.

Her own voice begging him to take Sophia inside.

Dominic answering:

“Then walk carefully.”

The ballroom became completely silent.

Claire lowered the papers.

“You knew the baby was outside?”

Dominic looked toward the detectives.

For the first time, he appeared to understand that the wedding had not been interrupted.

It had become the room where every lie met the people who believed it.
