Chapter 1 - The Rope

The rescue rope slammed into the snow beside me so hard that ice burst across the narrow ledge and stung my face. I gasped, both hands flying to my belly as the helicopter thundered above the cliff, its blades tearing snow from the rock wall and throwing the whole mountain into white chaos. For a second, I thought I had finally started hallucinating. No one was supposed to know I was alive.

Then a man in a bright blue rescue jacket swung down through the rotor wash, braced one boot against the icy wall, and dropped to one knee in front of me. He moved with the kind of control that made panic feel useless. Ropes, harness, gloves, silver hair beneath his helmet, blue eyes fixed on my face like he had crossed the mountain for one reason only.

“Emma… stay with me,” he said.

My name in his mouth scared me almost more than the cliff. My lips were cracked from cold. My body hurt in places I was afraid to name. I looked at him through the blur of snow and pain. “How do you know my name?”

He touched my cheek with one gloved hand, gentle enough not to hurt and urgent enough to keep me awake. Something broke across his face, something too personal for a stranger.

“Because I’ve been looking for you for years.”

High above us, on the ridge, two figures appeared against the bright winter sky. Michael. My husband. And Ashley beside him. They had come back to make sure the mountain had finished what they started.

The rescuer looked up, saw them, then looked back at me.

My hand tightened over my belly. “He tried to kill us.”

The man’s face went cold. He clipped the harness around me and spoke into his radio.

“She’s alive. And the husband stays on that mountain.”
