Officially, Mara was a civilian intelligence contractor assigned to Camp Ridgeline.
Her job description mentioned security assessments, classified-data procedures, and operational-risk analysis.
To most personnel, that meant reports.
Meetings.
Spreadsheets.
Rear Admiral Clayton Mercer encouraged that assumption.
During briefings, he interrupted Mara before she finished speaking.
He described her findings as academic.
When she identified weaknesses in base communications, he said she lacked practical experience.
Then he placed her inside a commando assessment intended for elite operators.
He expected her to fail publicly.
She did not.
Mara completed the endurance course ahead of several active-duty candidates.
She passed the navigation test in heavy rain.
During a tactical simulation, she identified an ambush route before the decorated team leader recognized it.
Every success made Mercer colder.
He began questioning her access.
Then her background.
Finally, her loyalty.
Holt followed the admiral’s example.
He called her a glorified secretary and told younger personnel she had received special treatment.
The shower-room confrontation looked like the natural result of weeks of contempt.
Mara knew better.
