Chapter 1 - The Strike

Kael hit Riley Voss before she finished saying his rank. The sound cracked across the Coronado training yard so sharply that the eighteen SEAL trainees behind him stopped laughing at the same time. Riley’s head snapped sideways, dust kicking up beneath her boots as one knee dropped into the sand. She caught herself with one hand, dark wet hair falling loose against her cheek, her split lip marking the only visible proof that Senior Chief Damon Kael had just crossed a line in front of his entire platoon.
For one breath, nobody moved. Marco Delaney, the largest man in the line, stared with his mouth slightly open. Travis Webb’s face changed first, not into outrage, but into calculation, as if he had just realized the morning had shifted from humiliation to evidence. Kael lowered his fist slowly, jaw tight, eyes hard, and said, “Drag her off my base.”

Still, nobody moved.
Riley stayed on one knee long enough to measure herself. Shoulder intact. Jaw moving. Vision steady. Breathing controlled. The yard waited for her to fall apart, scream, cry, or prove Kael right by reacting like the weak little contractor he had decided she was before she ever arrived. Instead, Riley spat a small trace of blood into the sand, pushed herself to her feet, and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. She looked at the red smear, then lifted her eyes to him.

“I warned you, Senior Chief.”
The words did not come loud. They did not need to. Every man in the yard heard them, and for the first time that morning, the silence belonged to her.
