Chapter 3 - The Family Group Chat

Nora’s phone vibrated because the family group chat had begun turning against her.

That was the part I did not understand until later.

While she recorded me on the floor, she had been streaming clips to a private thread she called Morales Family Truth. The name would have been funny if it had not been so sick. For weeks, she posted little moments of me dropping a spoon, crying after a doctor’s appointment, sitting quietly while Helena lectured me. She captioned them with things like Victor has his hands full and Pregnancy really made her impossible.

People reacted with laughing emojis.

That morning, she started recording before Victor picked up the stick.

Maybe she meant to capture me “refusing to cook.”

Maybe she wanted to show me breaking down.

Maybe Helena wanted fresh proof for whatever story they planned to tell when the baby came and they needed me discredited.

But phones do not understand loyalty.

They record what is in front of them.

Nora’s camera captured Helena laughing. Raul saying, “Take it from her.” Victor smashing my phone. My voice gasping, “The baby.” The wooden stick in his hand. His grip in my hair. His whisper asking if I thought someone was coming.

Then Alex’s first message hit the group.

Do not delete that video.

Then another.

Police are already on the way.

Then a third, with a screenshot from the emergency app showing my location and the audio recording active.

Nora’s face went white.

Victor saw it.

“Who is it?”

She clutched the phone to her chest.

“Nobody.”

Three hard knocks shook the front door.

Helena froze mid-laugh.

Raul stepped back from the table.

Victor’s grip loosened in my hair.

A man’s voice came from outside, calm and unmistakable.

“Victor, open the door.”

Alex.

My brother had arrived.

But he had not come alone.

Through the kitchen windows, red and blue lights swept across Helena’s face. The sound of car doors closing carried through the morning quiet. Another knock. Harder this time.

Victor’s eyes flicked toward the back door.

Raul saw it too.

“Don’t run,” Alex called from outside, voice still controlled. “They have every exit.”

A police officer’s voice followed.

“Police. Open the door.”

Helena stood quickly, smoothing her red floral blouse, already arranging her face into concern.

“This is a misunderstanding,” she whispered. “Nobody says anything.”

I almost laughed.

I was on the kitchen floor, phone shattered, hair still in Victor’s fist, six months pregnant and shaking.

And she still thought the room belonged to her.

Then someone outside said the sentence that changed everything.

“Police. We have the video.”

Nora made a sound like she had swallowed glass.
