Chapter 5 - Kael’s Pride

Kael should have stopped there. A smarter instructor would have recognized value. A better leader would have seen what Riley had just given them: a weakness exposed safely, a lesson learned without broken bones, a chance to improve before the next bad room overseas demanded payment.

But Kael saw only humiliation.

His biggest operator had been handled. His quietest operator had been out-thought. His men were no longer laughing at Riley. They were studying her.

That was unforgivable.

“You’re quick,” he said.

Riley nodded once. “Quick enough.”

“You think that works when someone doesn’t play by clinic rules?”

“This isn’t a clinic.”

“No,” Kael said. “It’s my yard.”

Riley’s eyes moved over the operators, the beige buildings, the ropes, the sand, the men watching him decide what kind of leader he was. “Then you should care what your yard teaches.”

A few SEALs looked down.

Kael heard the shift.

“You got something to say about my program?”

“Yes,” Riley said. “Your men are aggressive. They’re strong. They’re fast. But your system rewards dominance over decision-making. That’s why they’re getting hurt.”

Delaney, still breathing hard, looked away.

Kael stepped closer.

“Careful.”

Riley did not blink. “I said this before we started. If you want me to consult, I’ll consult. If you want me to flatter you, call someone else.”

The yard held still.

Kael’s fist moved before discipline could catch it.

Riley saw it.

She could have stopped it.

That was what Webb realized later and could not stop thinking about.

She let the strike land.

Because the lesson was no longer for Kael.

It was for everyone watching.
