Federal agents arrived before midnight.
Evan was not arrested immediately.
First, they secured the devices, preserved the apartment network, and interviewed everyone separately.
Evan claimed he had authority to move the college funds because he acted as Claire’s financial adviser.
Claire denied appointing him.
Documents showed he forged her authorization.
He claimed Northbridge was a legitimate educational company.
The dead director and empty mailbox disproved that.
He claimed the military-contracting transfers belonged to clients.
Investigators found identical authentication tokens on his laptop.
Then they searched Evan’s office.
Inside a locked cabinet were counterfeit government credentials, stolen client records, and photographs of him wearing military insignia at private investor events.
He used the image to attract veterans and military families.
He told them he had spent years protecting government assets.
In reality, he stole from people who believed service implied integrity.
Claire learned her marriage had been built on similar inventions.
Evan lied about his graduate degree.
His former employer had fired him for unauthorized account access.
The investment firm he claimed to own was a rented office and a website.
Even the down payment on their apartment came partly from money taken from one of Claire’s elderly clients when Evan briefly managed her bookkeeping.
My daughter believed she married an ambitious financial consultant.
She had married a man who constructed identities from whatever made other people lower their guard.
