Chapter 6 - THE FILE CALLED RECOVERY

The financial evidence revealed that Caleb’s betrayal had started long before the garage.

He had used my identity to apply for two business credit lines, not one. The first had already funded through an online lender that relied on electronic verification. Caleb transferred most of the money into his company and used the rest to cover personal gambling losses I never knew existed.

The second loan was tied to my house.

If it closed, the bungalow could eventually be taken if his business failed.

But the ugliest discovery was found on Caleb’s laptop.

Inside a folder labeled RECOVERY were draft documents, medical-care estimates, and a partially completed durable power of attorney naming him as the person authorized to manage my finances if I became physically incapable of handling them.

The document did not give him that authority yet. It still required my signature and proper execution. But its existence showed what Caleb imagined would happen after I was injured.

He would bring papers to the hospital.

He would tell me we needed them for insurance, rehabilitation, or bills.

He would control the house, the bank accounts, and every decision about where I recovered.

There were also messages between Caleb and his older brother, who worked at a private rehabilitation facility two hours away.

One message from Caleb read:

If she can’t drive or work for a while, she’ll stop talking about leaving. Once she depends on me again, I can handle the house paperwork.

The message had been sent four days before the attack.

Caleb had known about my escape plan before he found the duffel. He had installed monitoring software on our home computer and seen the apartment inquiry I made under my middle name. He watched me save money. He knew Erin had a key.

He did not confront me immediately.

He waited until the morning I tried to leave because he wanted the lesson attached to the act.

He was not trying merely to hurt me in anger.

He was trying to turn my body into the lock he could no longer keep on the door.
