Chapter 1

Everett Hale came home at 2:19 in the morning believing he had been careful.

No lipstick on his collar.

No hotel receipt in his pocket.

No missed call from Maren Vale glowing on his phone.

Just the faint amber perfume of another woman clinging to his shirt as his midnight-blue Bentley rolled through the rain and stopped outside the Lake Forest mansion his wife had always kept warm for him.

But tonight, the porch lights were off.

The windows were black.

And the house looked less like home than a place already closed to him.

Everett sat behind the wheel for a moment, irritated before he was afraid.

Claire hated darkness.

She left lamps glowing in hallways. She kept candles on the mantle. She said a beautiful house should never feel abandoned.

He stepped out into the rain, adjusted his navy suit jacket, and walked to the door.

Inside, the marble foyer was silent.

Too silent.

“Claire?” he called.

His voice echoed against the staircase.

No answer.

Rainwater dripped from his coat onto the floor, and even then, some small trained part of him paused. Claire hated rainwater on the marble.

That tiny habit made him feel almost decent.

He told himself what he had always told himself.

He provided.

He worked hard.

He gave Claire a life most women would envy.

If he found warmth somewhere else, it was not betrayal.

It was balance.

Then he noticed the cold.

The thermostat near the staircase read fifty-six degrees.

Away Mode.

Everett stared at it.

Claire was always cold.

She wore cashmere in July. She tucked blankets over every sofa. She kept the house warm enough to make him complain.

He touched the screen.

Nothing changed.

“Claire?” he called again, sharper now.

May you like

The silence did not answer.

It waited.
