Chapter 2 - The Perfect Wife Everyone Believed

My name is Alejandro Vargas.

I am forty-two years old, and for six years I let people believe Renata was the polished, brilliant woman standing beside my success.

At charity dinners, she called my mother “the heart of the family.”

At company events, she held my arm and smiled for photographs.

In front of investors, she spoke softly about loyalty, legacy, and family values.

Everyone loved her.

That was what made it work.

Behind closed doors, Renata became someone else.

She called my mother ignorant.

She called me weak.

She said a man who still listened to his mother would never be respected in business.

At first, I argued.

Then I apologized.

Then I learned that arguing only gave her more words to sharpen.

My mother, Doña Carmen, had raised me in Iztapalapa after my father died. She sold tamales outside a school to pay for my books. She cleaned offices at night when my tuition came due. Later, when I built Vargas Medical Supply from one rented warehouse into a national distributor, people called me self-made.

That was never true.

My mother’s hands built the first version of everything I owned.

And now those same hands were red from scrubbing a patio floor because my wife wanted to humiliate her before stealing the company she helped create.

Renata adjusted the belt of her white dress.

“We have an appointment with the notary tomorrow,” she said, as if we were discussing dinner plans. “You will sign the full power of attorney.”

“No.”

Her smile thinned.

“The company goes under my control. The house goes under my control. Your mother goes wherever I decide she belongs.”

My mother trembled behind me.

Renata looked pleased by that.

That was when I knew this had never been only about money.

It was about erasing the woman who remembered who I was before Renata taught me to doubt myself.
