Chapter 2 - Presumed Dead

By sunrise, my mother was supposed to receive a folded flag. A chaplain was supposed to stand on her porch in dress uniform, hat in hand, rehearsing the words every military family fears more than death itself. The report already said what everyone needed it to say.
Missing in action.
Presumed killed.
No body recovered.
That was the clean version. The kind that fits in a file. The kind that lets commanders brief rooms without choking on the details. It did not mention the valley. It did not mention the broken radio. It did not mention the SEAL team bleeding under a burned-out ridge while enemy patrols moved across the rocks like shadows.

It definitely did not mention that someone had left us there.
My name is Maya Reeves. I was twenty-two years old, five-foot-six, a special operations medic attached under a classification most people on that base would never see. To Captain Thorn, I looked like a problem walking back through his gate. A female soldier too young, too dirty, too silent, too inconvenient to fit whatever story he had already prepared.
Rook knew better.
Rook had been with me in the valley when the extraction coordinates changed. He had heard the final radio burst. He had pressed his body against mine when the dust settled and three wounded operators were still breathing while the rest of the world decided we were gone.
Thirty-two kilometers is not a number when you are walking it.
It is heat. Stone. Thirst. Bandages checked by touch in the dark. A man whispering his kid’s name. A dog leaning into your leg every time you stagger. A promise you keep making because stopping would make the lie true.
May you like
They left me for dead in that valley.
But I came back carrying witnesses.
