Chapter 5 - The Company Vance Thought Was His Future
Vance recovered in a chair with a nurse checking his pulse.
Eleanor recovered faster.
She stared at me.
“Your daughter?”
Graham handed Rose back to the nurse.
“Yes.”
Vance looked at me as though I had committed the betrayal.
“You never told me.”
“You never asked anything about my father that wasn’t connected to why he abandoned us.”
“You said he was gone.”
“He was.”
Graham remained silent.
Vance stood too quickly.
“Do you understand how insane this looks?”
I was holding a two-day-old baby.
He was worried about appearances.
Then Eleanor found the angle that mattered to her.
“Caldwell Maritime is the lead investor in the Northstar acquisition.”
Graham’s eyes moved toward her.
Vance had spent eighteen months positioning himself for an executive role inside Northstar Freight Systems.
His mother called it the promotion that would finally place him among serious families.
The transaction depended on a private investment group led by Caldwell Maritime.
Vance believed the deal would be announced within weeks.
He did not know Graham was its controlling investor.
He also did not know that every candidate for senior leadership required a final character and risk review.
Vance’s name was on that list.
Graham had arrived at the hospital as my father.
But before leaving his office, he had already seen an alert from the acquisition team regarding Vance’s executive application.
The report described him as stable, family-oriented, and dependable under pressure.
Graham looked at the man who had abandoned his laboring wife during a storm.
