Chapter 1 - You Lied to Your Own Mother

Margaret Whitmore froze the moment she stepped through Claire’s front door.
Claire stood in the hallway with a laundry basket pressed against one hip. Her hair was twisted into a loose, exhausted bun, and she wore one of Daniel’s old college sweatshirts because the heater had stopped working properly again.
Behind her, six-year-old Emma sat halfway up the staircase with her coloring book clutched against her chest. Three-year-old Noah stood beside her wrapped in a dinosaur blanket.
Both children were crying quietly.
Margaret looked around the room.
Toys covered the floor. Unopened bills sat beneath a paperweight on the coffee table. A space heater hummed near the couch.
“Where is Daniel?”
Claire lowered the basket.
“He left us twelve days ago.”
Margaret’s face drained.
“What do you mean, left?”
“He moved in with Vanessa.”
Headlights swept across the living-room wall.
A black pickup stopped in the driveway.
Daniel appeared on the porch carrying a suitcase. Beside him stood a young woman in a rust-colored dress and pale cardigan.
Vanessa.
Margaret slowly turned toward the open doorway.
Daniel stopped when he saw her.
“Mom?”
Margaret stepped between him and Claire.
“You lied to your own mother.”
Daniel glanced toward the children.
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
Claire almost laughed.
The divorce envelope remained on the entry table between them.

For twelve days, Daniel had controlled the story by telling each person a different lie.
Now all of them were standing in the same doorway.
