Chapter 8 - The Physics of Leverage

Noah stepped forward, his breathing ragged, his adolescent hands rising into a standard wrestling stance. He hesitated for half a second, intimidated by the sheer, immovable presence of his uncle, before reaching his right arm beneath Roman’s left armpit, burying his hand high on Roman’s latissimus dorsi, and planting his forehead firmly against Roman’s sternum.

Roman did not move. He stood like an iron piling driven into bedrock, his teeth clamped shut behind his lips, determined not to let his fourteen-year-old nephew feel the agony radiating through his lumbar vertebrae.

"Now, Noah," Gia commanded, circling them with the predatory grace of an instructor who saw every line of force. "Don't pull with your bicep. If you pull, he crushes you with seventy pounds of mass. Rotate your right hip. Drop your center of gravity below his belt line. Drive off the back foot."

The boy adjusted. He dropped his hips four inches, squared his stance, and engaged his quadriceps. With a sudden, explosive pop of his hips, Noah rotated his torso, his shoulder driving into Roman’s chest while his underhook lifted upward like a hydraulic jack.

It was a textbook execution of mechanical leverage.

Under normal circumstances, an athletic, two-hundred-and-twenty-pound man could have neutralized the maneuver with a simple sprawl or a heavy cross-face. But Roman had no lumbar foundation to brace against. The sudden rotational torque sent an electrical shock of pure neurological agony through his L5 nerve root.

Roman’s left leg buckled instantly.

He didn't fall—his pride and his massive upper body prevented the collapse—but his heel skated backward across the blue vinyl with a sharp, squealing friction. A strangled, guttural gasp tore from his throat as his torso tilted, his hands flying out of his pockets to catch Noah’s shoulders to keep himself from slamming face-first onto the mat.

Noah pulled back immediately, his eyes round with absolute horror, believing he had just broken the most feared man in Illinois. "Uncle Roman! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to—"

"Step back, Noah," Gia said instantly, her voice firm, calm, and utterly devoid of panic.

The boy retreated four paces, his hands trembling.

Roman remained hunched over, his hands resting heavily on his own knees, his breath coming in ragged, whistling heaves. Sweat dripped from the tip of his nose, landing in dark, circular drops on the blue vinyl between his polished oxfords. The tailored charcoal jacket was bunched across his back, revealing the terrible, unnatural curvature of his lumbar spine where the muscles were locked in a violent, defensive cramp.

Victor Lane was already on the move from the bleachers, his hand once again disappearing into his jacket, his boots pounding across the mat with lethal speed.

"Stay where you are, Victor!" Gia snapped, her voice cracking like a bullwhip across the warehouse.

The authority in her tone was so sharp, so absolute, that the security chief skidded to a halt ten feet away, his chest heaving, his face contorted in an agony of divided loyalty and tactical panic.

Gia dropped onto one knee directly in front of Roman DeLuca.

She looked up into his face. His teeth were bared, a line of bloody saliva caught at the corner of his lip where he had bitten his tongue to keep from screaming in front of his nephew. The veins in his neck were thick, pulsing blue cables against the pale skin.

"Roman," Gia whispered, her eyes locking onto his dilated pupils. "Look at me."

The mafia boss slowly raised his bloodshot eyes to meet hers.

"You're in acute nerve impingement," she said, her voice dropping into a gentle, rhythmic cadence that cut through the roaring panic in his head. "If you try to stand up using your back muscles right now, the disc will rupture through the longitudinal ligament. You will be on the floor, and Victor will have to carry you out to an ambulance in front of your nephew."

Roman’s fingers clawed into the fabric of his trousers above his knees, his knuckles turning chalk-white. "Then... what do I do?" he grated out, the words tasting like gravel.

"You let me decompress the joint," Gia said. "Right here. On the mat."
