Chapter 10 - The Echo of Life

Sheriff Brody stood up, walking over to the window that looked out over the hospital courtyard.

"He told us he was sitting under the porch window outside the chapel, crying," Brody continued, his tone filled with reverence. "He said he heard a sound coming through the glass. A faint, steady tapping against wood."

Clara looked down at her hands, her broken fingernails a silent, permanent testament to the frantic struggle she had waged in total darkness inside the satin-lined box before her strength had failed.

"I remembered... the game we played," Clara whispered, her voice choking with emotion. "When he was little... whenever we played hide-and-seek... I would tap three times on the closet door to let him know I was near..."

The hospital door pushed open softly. Dr. Vance stepped into the room, holding a medical chart, a warm smile on his weathered face.

"Her vitals are completely stable, Sheriff," Dr. Vance reported. "The toxicology screen confirmed our suspicions, but her liver function is strong. She will make a full, complete recovery."

Brody nodded, slipping his notepad into his uniform pocket. "Arthur’s formal indictment for attempted premeditated murder, kidnapping, and insurance fraud will be filed at eight AM tomorrow. He won't see the outside of a state penitentiary for the rest of his natural life."

Brody tipped his hat to Clara and walked out into the corridor, closing the door quietly behind him.

Clara slowly pushed back her hospital blanket, swung her legs over the side of the bed, and walked barefoot across the cool floorboards to the small cot in the corner.

She sat on the edge of the cot, leaning down to press a soft, warm kiss against her son's forehead.

Toby’s eyes fluttered open. He looked up, seeing his mother's face illuminated by the soft nightlight, her skin warm, her breathing steady and deep.

"Mommy?" Toby whispered, his voice small and sleepy.

"I’m right here, my brave boy," Clara whispered back, pulling him into her arms and holding him tightly against her heart. "I’m right here, and I’m never going away."

Toby buried his face into her neck, feeling the rhythmic, strong beat of her pulse against his cheek. Outside, the night was quiet, but inside the small hospital room, the sound of life was clear, loud, and unshakeable.
