Chapter 10 - The Sovereign and the Shadow

The silence in the room was no longer peaceful. It was pressurized, heavy with the terrifying weight of an impending explosion.

Danny did not move. He did not pull his arm from beneath her neck, nor did he reach for the Kimber under his pillow.

His mind, sharpened by years of ruthless survival, began connecting the impossible threads with clinical, terrifying speed.

Emma Carter.

She had appeared on the domestic contractor’s payroll three weeks ago. She had taken the graveyard shifts that no other maid wanted. She had scrubbed the floors outside his private suite with deliberate, stubborn visibility. She had looked into the eyes of the most feared crime boss in the city without flinching. She had managed his medication with the precise, clinical knowledge of someone who understood neurological trauma.

And now, she was lying in his bed, with the private insignia of his father’s assassin resting on the silk beside her hair.

Who are you? Danny thought, his gray eyes boring into her features.

Was she the daughter of the traitor? Was she a plant sent by the syndicate to monitor his recovery? Or was she an executioner who had simply run out of adrenaline before she could strike?

He looked at her hands again.

He saw the cracked knuckles. He saw the chemical burns from the bleach. He felt the rapid, fragile beat of her heart against his ribs.

If she was an assassin, she was the worst in the history of the underworld. She had fallen asleep on her target’s chest, completely unarmed, leaving her prize exposed on the sheets for him to find in the morning light.

Emma stirred.

A soft, drowsy sigh escaped her lips. Her forehead rubbed gently against the dark ink of his collarbone, her small hand flexing against his chest, her fingers brushing the jagged scar over his heart.

Slowly, her dark eyelashes lifted.

She blinked once, twice, against the lavender light of the dawn.

Her gaze shifted upward, clearing through the fog of deep sleep, and locked directly into the icy, unblinking gray eyes of Danny Marcone looking down at her from six inches away.

For two full seconds, Emma did not realize where she was.

She saw the broad, scarred chest beneath her cheek. She saw the dark wavy hair, the heavy stubble, the predatory stillness of the man looking down at her.

Then, the reality of the room crashed down upon her.

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat.

Her dark brown eyes dilated in sheer, unadulterated shock. She looked at her arm draped over his bare chest; she looked at the white silk sheets beneath her hips; she looked at the custom wheelchair parked beside the bed.

She did not scream. She did not scramble backward in panic.

Her hand slowly slipped from his chest, her fingers hovering in the air between them, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths.

"I..." Emma whispered, her voice rough with sleep, the single syllable trembling in the freezing morning air.

Danny did not raise his voice. He did not reach for his weapon.

He simply reached out with his left hand, his long, tattooed fingers closing slowly around the antique silver cigarette case resting on the sheet beside her pillow.

May you like

He lifted the silver into the light, holding it directly between their faces.

"Good morning, Emma," Danny said softly, his deep baritone smoother than silk and colder than the winter lake outside. "Now tell me why you're carrying a dead man's silver in my bed."
