Chapter 9
Master Sergeant Anders, the man whose tablet search started everything, was promoted the following year and now runs maintenance operations across two squadrons. He keeps a printed copy of the green IDENTITY CONFIRMED screen taped inside his locker. He says it reminds him to actually read the files instead of trusting the summary.
Mercer apologized to me eleven days after the rescue, in the hangar, in front of the same crew who had laughed when she called me the oil rag. I told her she didn't need to apologize for not knowing what she couldn't have known. She said that wasn't the point — the point was that she'd decided what I was worth before she had any information at all, and she didn't want to be someone who did that twice. We fly together now without incident. I respect her more for that conversation than I would have if she'd simply never said the thing in the first place.
I still keep a small apartment off base, the same one I had as a contractor, with the same porch where I used to sit and listen to pickup trucks roll down the gravel road. I sit there less than I used to. There is more to do now. But some nights I still go out, and I still listen, and I still think about Mark Danner's name carved into white stone in Nevada, and about the fact that the truth, once it finally arrived, came eleven years and one emergency too late to give him back anything at all.
It gave everyone else something, though.
It gave Hayes his life. It gave Anders his career correction. It gave Danner's mother a letter she'd waited eleven years to receive, even if the letter could not undo what it confirmed. It gave me my name back, and my rank, and a wingman who never asks, and a porch I sit on less often because there is finally enough daylight in my life to spend somewhere else.
