Chapter 8 - The Silent Indictment

The question did not demand a defense; it demanded an execution target.

Emily stood braced against the doorframe, her trembling hand resting atop Dante’s large, inked fingers where they remained anchored to her pregnant stomach. She felt the lethal, coiled energy humming through his body, the terrifying physical power of a man who could command an army of five hundred armed soldiers with a single nod of his chin.

She did not scream accusations. She did not launch into a hysterical recitation of the insults, the withheld meals, the freezing nights spent on a cot in the laundry basement, or the terror of feeling her twins convulse from dehydration while guards laughed outside her locked door.

Truth, in its purest form, required no theatrics.

Slowly, deliberately, Emily lifted her chin. Her expressive, tear-soaked hazel eyes moved away from Dante’s face, looking past the muscular crest of his broad shoulder, and locked directly onto the woman standing six feet behind him.

Dante did not ask a second time.

He felt the shift in Emily’s gaze. With slow, terrifying fluidity, Dante rose from his knee, straightening his six-foot-two frame to its full, imposing height. As he turned his body around, the bespoke black wool of his suit seemed to swallow the amber light of the corridor, casting a long, suffocating shadow that stretched across the Crema Marfil marble until it engulfed Vanessa Laurent completely.

Vanessa froze.

The air left her lungs in a sharp, audible gasp. She tried to step backward, but her high-heeled shoe caught the edge of a floor runner, throwing her off balance. She stumbled against the cream-colored wall of the corridor, her shoulder blades slamming against the smooth plaster, her left hand flying to her throat to clutch her diamond necklace like a rosary in a ruined church.

Her face was no longer merely pale; it was the color of curdled milk. Her bold red lips trembled so violently that her teeth clicked together, her dark brown eyes bulging in absolute, unadulterated terror as she looked into the face of the man who had elevated her from an obscure accountant into the luxury of his inner circle.

“D-Dante…” Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic whine that bore no resemblance to the smooth, seductive purr she had used minutes earlier. “Dante, listen to me… she’s lying! She’s confused! The doctors—the psychiatric reports—I did everything to protect your name! I was trying to preserve the family’s honor while you were fighting the Lucchese family in New York!”

Dante did not say a word.

He took one step toward her. Then another.

His movements were not rushed. He moved with the terrifying, measured grace of an executioner stepping onto the scaffold. His piercing brown eyes were locked onto her throat, his hands resting loose and unhurried at his sides.

“Dante, please!” Vanessa shrieked, pressing her back as hard as she could against the hospital wall, as if she could physically dissolve through the plaster to escape the darkness advancing upon her. “I love you! I’ve been by your side for three years! Would you believe the delusions of a broken, hysterical woman over me? Over everything we built? Look at her—she’s unhinged! She put that uniform on herself to manipulate you!”
