Chapter 10 - THE SOVEREIGN GAVEL

Judge Arthur Norris did not hesitate.

The experienced judge rose to his full height behind the bench, his black robes billowing around his shoulders, his face carved from pure, unyielding granite. He did not reach for the divorce documents; he reached for the master court telephone mounted beside his gavel.

"Bailiffs!" Judge Norris’s voice boomed through the courtroom like an artillery strike, cutting through the chaos in an instant. "Detain Clara Sterling immediately! Lock the doors of this courtroom! Nobody leaves the gallery!"

Two armed bailiffs moved with lightning speed, flanking the ivory-clad woman. Before Clara could scream a second time, her wrists were pinned behind her back, the cold steel of handcuffs clicking shut with a definitive, metallic snap.

"Julian Vance," Judge Norris continued, his cold, furious gaze looking down at the broken don weeping on the floor. "You are remanded into immediate federal custody on suspicion of attempted aggravated feticide, conspiracy to commit murder, and witness tampering. The divorce proceedings are hereby suspended. All assets of the Vance syndicate within this jurisdiction are frozen under an emergency protective writ."

The judge slammed his wooden gavel down three times.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

The sound marked the absolute, permanent destruction of the Vance family name.

In the center of the aisle, six-year-old Leo did not watch the bailiffs drag Clara away. He did not look at his father groveling in the carpet.

He walked slowly back toward the bar gate, where Audrey stood with her hand resting over her pregnant belly.

Leo reached out his small, pale hand and touched the soft velvet of his mother’s dress, right over the spot where his unborn sister was kicking beneath the fabric.

He looked up into Audrey’s tear-streaked, beautiful face with his large brown eyes, holding his worn beige rabbit securely against his chest.

"Is the baby okay, Mommy?" Leo asked softly, his sweet, innocent voice carrying through the ruined courtroom like a ray of pure morning light.

Audrey sank slowly back down onto her knees, ignoring the pain in her body, and wrapped both of her arms around her son. She buried her face in his hair, pulling his small body and the battered stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest, her tears soaking into his navy suit.

"Yes, baby," Audrey wept, her voice rich with an eternal, unbreakable maternal love that no mafia don could ever buy or destroy. "The baby is safe. We are all safe now."

Outside the tall windows of Courtroom 3B, the autumn clouds finally parted, allowing the brilliant, blinding Missouri sunlight to flood the room, washing over the mother and her children as they stood together in the light, leaving the shadows of the empire behind them forever.
